From Thief To Ninja
Initially, the first “Final Fantasy” featured roles, or jobs, that players could assign to their four party members, including Warrior, Thief, Monk, Red Mage, Black Mage, and White Mage. At the start of the game, players made their selections, but midway through, these jobs could be upgraded, transforming seemingly weak ones into incredibly potent versions. For instance, the Thief could evolve into a Ninja, gaining access to additional equipment options and even Black Magic spells – an unusual trait for a Ninja in these games, making this version particularly powerful within the series.

The First Reversible Job System

In contrast to the original Final Fantasy, where jobs remained fixed, Final Fantasy 3 introduced a dynamic job system that allowed players to learn and switch jobs as they advanced. However, this 1990 NES game was inaccessible to Western fans until its release as the Pixel Remaster edition in 2021. Prior to that, fans could experience the DS 3D remake in 2006. There are distinctions between these versions, with the Ninja character being stronger or weaker depending on the version. For instance, in the 3D remake, Ninjas have the ability to throw items at enemies, but their equipment selection is limited. In contrast, non-3D versions offer a wider range of gear for the Ninja character.

In the narrative, the party acquires ninja characters when they reach the Fire Crystal naturally. These agile warriors are capable of wielding two weapons simultaneously without any drawbacks, significantly enhancing their physical attack potency. Moreover, they can execute a ‘Throw’ command. The skill ‘Dual-Wield’ is transferable to other roles, empowering them similarly.

License To Kill

In Final Fantasy 12, Jobs are managed differently compared to other games in the series. Instead of starting from scratch on a License Board, every character starts at a specific point but can expand their abilities through a Chess-like skill progression system. There are twelve jobs associated with the zodiac signs, and the Shikari Job, a combination of Ninja and Thief roles, falls under Pisces. The protagonist, Vaan, begins in this section of the License Board. Players can unlock equipment for items like Daggers, Ninja Swords, and Light Armor using License Points (LP).

In the world of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 11 marked the beginning of the MMO series and every expansion introduced fresh Jobs to conquer. Unlike in Final Fantasy 11, where the Ninja Job was locked behind the first expansion called Rise of Zilart, players in Final Fantasy 14 initially had to become a Rogue, or the Thief equivalent, and then embark on a side quest to unlock the Ninja role. Unlike other games’ ninjas, those in Final Fantasy 14 were equipped with abilities to handle multiple adversaries simultaneously, making it more than just about mastering gear.

Back in the day, I stumbled upon a game that revolutionized my gaming experience as a Western player – it was the first tactical RPG with a swappable Job system.
Much like Final Fantasy 5, the main attraction of having a Ninja character was the ability to wield two weapons without any penalties. This unique skill could only be accessed after advancing through the Archer, Geomancer, and Thief roles. Notably, Ninjas were also featured in the indirect sequel that continued the storyline within Ivalice – Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

For instance, to play as a Ninja, players must progress through the Thief and Samurai Jobs, which follows a logical sequence.
