MOUSE: P.I. for Hire is a delightful first-person shooter with a retro cartoon look, reminiscent of classic characters like Popeye, early Mickey Mouse, and Felix the Cat. While the game has a lot to offer, a major draw is the performance by Troy Baker, who plays private investigator Jack Pepper. Baker perfectly embodies the personality of a classic film noir detective, adding extra charm to this enjoyable shooting game.
Troy Baker is a hugely popular voice actor, especially among gamers. While he’s worked on projects outside of video games, he’s become most famous for his work in the gaming world. Over the past twenty years, he’s played so many iconic characters that many compare him to Christian Bale – a well-known and respected actor in Hollywood. Both Baker and Bale have impressive careers and are highly regarded in their respective fields.
Troy Baker and Christian Bale Share a Level of Range That is Hard to Match
Troy Baker is an incredibly versatile voice actor, demonstrated by the diverse range of games he’s appeared in. It’s surprising to learn that the actor behind the iconic and heartbreaking Joel Miller in The Last of Us also provides the voice for the quirky Jack Pepper in MOUSE: P.I. for Hire. His performance as Joel, both in The Last of Us and its sequel, remains a standout achievement in the gaming world.

Christian Bale is another actor with an impressive filmography over the last twenty years. He’s incredibly versatile, tackling roles in movies like The Machinist, Reign of Fire, The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma, and The Big Short, which showcase his wide range. And, of course, he’s well-known for playing Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy – a slightly more restrained performance, but one that many fans consider definitive.
Troy Baker has voiced Batman in a Telltale game, and he’s actually quite familiar with the Batman universe. He’s played several key characters in the Batman Arkham series, including Two-Face, Jason Todd, and even the Joker in Origins. However, the connection to Batman isn’t the primary reason people compare him to Michael Caine’s portrayal of Alfred; it’s their impressive range as actors.
Christian Bale is famous for completely changing his body for each role, whether it’s gaining or losing weight, or perfecting a character’s movements. He truly becomes the person he’s playing. Troy Baker does something similar, but with his voice. While many voice actors are good at sounding different, both Baker and Bale are so convincing you forget you’re even watching an actor.
A Brief Look at Some of Troy Baker’s Best Roles Over the Years

Troy Baker and Christian Bale Will Both Leave Holes in Their Industries Once They Eventually Retire
From what I’ve heard, Christian Bale and Troy Baker aren’t planning on retiring anytime soon, but eventually they will, and it’s going to leave a huge gap in both movies and games. Bale’s really unique in Hollywood – he can disappear into a role and still carry a film. It’s a rare skill! If he ever decided to step back, Jake Gyllenhaal is the first actor I’d think of to take his place. Seriously, Gyllenhaal’s best roles are when he’s allowed to really go for it. Think about movies like Nightcrawler, Prisoners, Donnie Darko, Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, and even his Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home – he’s got the same kind of range as Bale, no question.
I just saw Christian Bale as Frankenstein in The Bride! – it came out earlier this year, and I thought he was amazing!
Two Voice Actors Are Giving Troy Baker a Run for His Money
Voice actors Ben Starr and Jennifer English are currently experiencing a surge in popularity and success. Both are building impressive careers, potentially reaching the level of Troy Baker. Ben Starr has recently starred in critically acclaimed games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which won Game of the Year last year, as well as popular titles such as Date Everything! and Dead Take.
Jennifer English, who also starred in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, gave a stunning performance as Maelle, winning the Best Performance award at the 2025 Game Awards. She’s rapidly building an impressive list of game roles, and along with Ben Starr, is becoming incredibly popular – potentially reaching the level of Troy Baker.
Troy Baker’s next project is with Naughty Dog on their game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. While his role is currently unknown, it’s sure to be captivating, as he consistently delivers strong performances in their games. It’s hard to imagine the gaming world without Troy Baker, and hopefully he’ll continue to act for many years to come. He’s become a leading figure in video game acting, but talented performers like Jennifer English and Ben Starr demonstrate that the future of voice acting in games is bright and full of potential.
