The new proof of concept is designed to showcase all the core functions of this shiny new investing mechanism: Gold token issuance, transaction processing, reconciliation, and probably a few magic tricks too. 🎩✨

In this grand experiment, UBS deployed smart contracts on the ZKsync Validium testnet, which was chosen for its enhanced privacy and resource-effective scalability. Because who doesn’t want their gold investments to be as private as a secret agent’s diary? 🕵️‍♂️

Better instruments for securities tokenization in Web3

This is another great example of how UBS collaborates with technology providers to stay at the forefront of innovation. Whilst tokenized securities hold a lot of potential to bring new solutions to our clients, scalability, privacy, and interoperability remain key challenges to overcome. Our PoC with ZKsync demonstrated that Layer 2 networks and ZK technology hold the potential to resolve these.

This isn’t UBS’s first tango with blockchain. As previously reported by U.Today, the banking giant is already running a tokenized money market fund on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Because why stop at one shiny new toy when you can have a whole toy store? 🏬

Also, in Q1 2024, UBS decided to spice things up by purchasing 3,600 shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), one of the first ETFs on spot Bitcoin. Because if you can’t beat them, buy a piece of their digital pie! 🥧
