In a development that would make even the most jaded sci-fi author blush, a UK man has accused his estranged wife of stealing 2,323 Bitcoin using a hidden camera. Because, of course, nothing says “I love you” like secretly recording your spouse’s every move to steal their digital assets.
- Ping Fai Yuen’s tale of woe includes a wife and sister who, through covert surveillance, managed to obtain his seed phrase. It’s like a spy movie, but with more cryptocurrency and less James Bond.
- Funds were moved to 71 wallet addresses, with no activity recorded since December 2023. The police, in their infinite wisdom, arrested the accused and seized devices-because nothing says “investigation” like confiscating luxury watches and cold wallets.
- A UK High Court judge said the claimant has a strong chance of success. The defendant, meanwhile, has yet to provide an alternative explanation, which is probably because they’re busy trying to figure out how to reverse the Bitcoin theft without a time machine.
The UK High Court of Justice has been presented with a case so bizarre, one might wonder if the judge was given a cup of tea and a copy of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” before making their decision. The plaintiff, Ping Fai Yuen, claims his wife and her sister used surveillance to get his seed phrase, which is basically the key to his digital kingdom.
Ping figured something was wrong after allegedly being tipped off by his daughter, following which he installed audio recording equipment that he claims captured conversations related to the alleged theft and plans to move the funds. It’s a good thing he didn’t just ask her for a hint, because that might have been less effective than a hidden camera.
However, court documents claim no transactions have taken place from the wallets since Dec. 21, 2023. The police, in their infinite wisdom, arrested the wife and confiscated several cold wallets and luxury watches as part of the investigation. Because nothing says “I’m serious” like seizing a watch and a few digital coins.
Last year, Ping filed an application asking the court to freeze all crypto assets linked to his wife, formally recognize his ownership of the Bitcoin, and either return the funds or award him their equivalent value in fiat currency. At the time, he also raised concerns about a potential crypto dusting attack, which involves sending small amounts of cryptocurrency to wallets to track activity and identify high-value holders. Because nothing says “I’m paranoid” like worrying about being tracked by a few cents.
According to the judge presiding over the case, Ping has a high chance of success, noting that the defendant had not provided “any alternative (or any) explanation for the movement of the Bitcoin.” The judge, with the gravitas of a man who’s seen it all, stated that Ping has a high chance of success. The defendant, meanwhile, has yet to provide an alternative explanation, which is probably because they’re busy trying to figure out how to reverse the Bitcoin theft without a time machine.
“The evidence is that he was warned of what the First Defendant was seeking to do, the transcripts are damning; and when the First Defendant’s property was searched, the necessary equipment to exfiltrate the Bitcoin was found,” the judge wrote. It’s like finding a pirate’s treasure map in a modern-day treasure hunt.
Further, the judge stated that the court will schedule a case management hearing if the parties fail to agree on the next steps and have recommended an early trial, citing the security risks and price volatility associated with Bitcoin. Because nothing says “I’m serious” like worrying about Bitcoin’s price swings during a trial.
Recent crypto theft cases
As previously reported by crypto.news, last month, John Daghita was arrested in Saint Martin for allegedly stealing more than $46 million in cryptocurrency. Authorities allege Daghita misappropriated over $46 million in cryptocurrency from wallets held by the U.S. Marshals Service while working as a government contractor. Because nothing says “I’m a hero” like stealing from the government-except, apparently, stealing from your spouse.
