Summary

  • Naruto achieves his dream of becoming Hokage to ensure peace in the Hidden Leaf Village.
  • Various Kage ruled their Hidden Villages for decades, shaping the landscape with their ideals.
  • Naruto’s tenure as Hokage faces challenges from new threats, but he works to maintain the peace.

Naruto Uzumaki, our protagonist, has long harbored a dream of becoming the Hokage. This ambition is realized when his son Boruto is born in an era of peace following years of war. However, the tranquility doesn’t last as the “Boruto” series reveals fresh dangers emerging after this peaceful epoch, which was established at the end of Naruto’s saga. Concurrently, viewers get a glimpse of how the Kages from the Hidden Villages strive tirelessly to maintain the prosperous era they all contributed towards during Naruto’s journey.

Fortunately, this vision of tranquil villages is widely held by numerous individuals – some Kage have reigned for entire decades and observed the development of these principles. While Naruto stands out as a significant Hokage, other fellow Kage have held power far longer than he has, molding their secretive Villages in ways that influenced their image throughout the narrative.

10. Naruto Uzumaki

Finally Achieved His Dream Of Being Hokage

  • Debut: Naruto Episode 1

In his own TV series, Naruto Uzumaki is portrayed as a trickster hero with a noble spirit who tirelessly strives for the Hidden Leaf Village to acknowledge him beyond being the Jinchuriki of the Nine-Tails. Despite facing seemingly impossible challenges and putting his life on the line to safeguard his companions, Naruto eventually realizes his ambition approximately five to seven years following the occurrences in Shippuden. This was when he officially assumed the position of the Seventh Hokage at a time when Boruto was five and Himawari was still quite young. Consequently, Naruto is around 32 years old when Boruto starts, implying that he had served as Hokage for approximately seven years by then.

In a fresh epoch, assuming the title of Hokage demanded addressing the persistent turmoil that Hidden Leaf Village had faced in the past, notably with the Akatsuki causing havoc and Danzo spreading fear during the reigns of Hiruzen and Tsunade. Regrettably for Naruto, his leadership was tested by the emergence of Momoshiki Otsutuski and the Kara organization. However, this struggle appeared to end temporarily when he supposedly perished at the hands of the stranger Boruto (due to Kawaki’s role reversal ability).

9. Chojuro

Mei Terumi’s Former Retainer Proves He Is Worthy Of The Seat

  • Debut: Shippuden Episode 199

To start with, the quiet and spectacled individual named Chojuro is first presented at the Five Kage Summit as one of the bodyguards for the Fifth Mizukage, Mei Terumi. Contrary to his modest demeanor, Chojuro belongs to the final group of the Hidden Mist’s Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, bearing the responsibility of wielding the colossal dual-blade Hiramekarei.

Over approximately 12 to 15 years, Chojuro assumed the role of Mizukage around the same period as Darui and Kurotsuchi. During this tenure, his personality underwent a significant transformation. He became more composed, self-assured, and resolute. This change is reflected in his strategic problem-solving methods. However, Chojuro’s aspiration for a tranquil Hidden Mist clashes with the Village’s traditional ways, a conflict he’s been grappling with for quite some time.

8. Darui

The Easy-Going Apprentice Of The Third Raikage

  • Debut: Shippuden Episode 199

Regarding Darui, although he maintains a relaxed demeanor, he is an exceptionally skilled swordsman and shinobi. He was trained personally by the Third Raikage and frequently teams up with C in adherence to their village’s tradition. Following the death of the Third Raikage, Darui and Bee assumed the roles of bodyguards for the new Fourth Raikage. At the Five Kage Summit, Darui drew significant attention due to his mastery over Wind, Water, and Lightning Releases, particularly his adeptness with Black Lightning, a technique synonymous with the Third Raikage.

Darui’s swordsmanship is so exceptional that he can match up against Suigetsu, who’s often compared to the legendary Zabuza of the Mist, one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. Despite his family responsibilities in Boruto, Darui fulfills his duties as Raikage diligently. Given that A retired after the Fourth Great Ninja War and Darui took over, he’s likely been in this position for around 12 to 15 years.

7. Kurotsuchi

The Dutiful Granddaughter Of Onoki

  • Debut: Shippuden Episode 199

Originally, Kurotsuchi displayed a fierce allegiance to the Hidden Stone Village, even considering the elimination of the hosts of the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails in order to solidify its dominance. With her self-assurance and abilities, she proved herself a competent leader, earning the role of bodyguard for the Third Tsuchikage – who was also her grandfather during the Five Kage Summit. Post-Shippuden, it appears that Kurotsuchi assumed the position of the Fourth Tsuchikage after her grandfather’s retirement.

In the grand storyline of Boruto and beyond, Two Blue Vortexes, I proudly stood as Tsuchikage. For at least a span of 12 to 15 years, I’ve held the prestigious title of Kage for the Hidden Stone, a role that carries immense honor and responsibility. From my actions during Naruto’s rescue mission to following orders that ensure peace in our village, every decision I make is deeply rooted in upholding the dignity of my position as Kurotsuchi, the Kage.

6. Gaara

The Former One-Tails Jinchuriki

  • Debut: Naruto Episode 20

Earlier, Gaara was infamously known as the ruthless guardian of the One-Tail, but his intense battle with Naruto showed him the importance of caring for those dear to him. Despite the Fourth Kazekage’s wish for Gaara to remain merely a Jinchuriki rather than a son, it was Naruto’s determination that encouraged Gaara to value others more deeply. This transformation made Gaara an enlightened Fifth Kazekage before he reached 15 years old, making him one of the youngest Kages in history. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Gaara demonstrated remarkable leadership skills as well.

During the storyline of Boruto, which occurs approximately 12 to 15 years following Shippuden’s events, Gaara remains as the Fifth Kazekage. In the narrative of Two Blue Vortex, a three-year time jump after Boruto, Gaara continues in his role as the Fifth Kazekage. This places him around the age of 30 to 33 years old, and he has held the position of Kazekage for at least 15 to 18 years by this point in the story.

5. Rasa

Spent Much Of His Tenure Subduing The One-Tails And Its Periodic Attacks

  • Debut: Naruto Episode 57

Lovers of Naruto may find themselves surprised when they discover that, during the same timeframe as Naruto’s birth, the Hidden Sand Village endured regular assaults by the One-Tailed Beast. It was the resilience and heroism of past Kazekage, particularly Fourth Kazekage Rasa, that prevented Shukaku from obliterating the village completely. Regrettably, due to budget cuts imposed by the Daimyo of the Land of Wind, support for the Hidden Sand Village dwindled. This financial strain led Rasa to prepare his unborn son as a potential new host for Shukaku, ultimately resulting in the death of his wife, Karura, during childbirth.

For over 15 years and possibly even longer, Rasa served as the Kazekage, during which he trained Gaara to be a vessel for Shukaku. This training, unfortunately, led Gaara to become ruthless and cruel. It’s worth noting that his siblings, Temari and Kankuro, were already born while Rasa was in power. Tragically, Rasa met his end at the hands of Orochimaru, but it is likely that he held the position for much more time than just these 15 years, given that the Third Kazekage had been absent for quite a while before Rasa took over.

4. Hashirama Senju

One Of Konoha’s Founding Fathers

  • Debut: Naruto Episode 69

Among the original founders of Konoha village, it was presumed that Hashirama Senju, given his stature, would hold a long-lasting leadership role. However, due to the ongoing feud between his clan and the Uchihas at the time, the tranquility that Hashirama and Madara Uchiha envisioned for their new Hidden Leaf Village never fully materialized during their lifetime. Despite this, Hashirama is renowned for his tireless efforts to unify his own clan with that of his cherished friend, and even welcomed other clans under a common banner, rather than allowing them to continue battling each other during the tumultuous period they lived in.

Although we don’t have precise details about how long Hashirama served as Hokage, it is possible to make a rough estimate based on certain events in his life. For example, Madara is believed to have departed from the Hidden Leaf Village 66 years before the Fourth Great Ninja War. Also, there were 49 years between the First and Fourth Great Ninja Wars. This suggests that Hashirama might have been Hokage for around about 17 years prior to his demise.

3. A, Or Ay

The Stalwart Protector Of Kumogakure

  • Debut: Shippuden Episode 152

In terms of speed, A or Ay, who was the son of the Third Raikage and partnered with Bee, the Eight-Tails’ Jinchuriki, in their Village’s signature Lightning Release: Double Lariat, is often compared to pre-Hokage Minato Namikaze. Known for his bold and decisive nature, A is a highly rational and militaristic individual, prioritizing the interests of the Village above all else. Unlike other Kage leaders, A stands out as impulsive, boisterous, and arrogant, which Bee pointed out as the reason that he could never fully realize his potential.

Observing the chronicles of Kumogakure, I note that while Darui eventually assumes the role of Fifth Raikage, it’s A who lays the groundwork for the village’s power. Although specific dates are elusive regarding his tenure as the Fourth Raikage, it seems plausible that he took over from his father prior to the Nine-Tails’ assault on Konoha, given his position as Raikage during the Hyuga Affair. As Hinata was only three when these events unfolded, and A maintained his role until the end of Shippuden, it’s safe to assume that he served as the Fourth Raikage for at least 20 to 25 years.

2. Hiruzen Sarutobi

The God Of Shinobi Who Ruled For Two Tenures

  • Debut: Naruto Episode 1

In a blaze of determination that left Tobirama Senju astonished, a young and unassuming Hiruzen Sarutobi was hand-picked by Tobirama to be his successor towards the end of the Second Ninja War. This early selection made Hiruzen the Hokage in his twenties. Despite his youth, Hiruzen’s battlefield experience during the war and skillful maneuvering within the power struggles of the Hidden Leaf Village granted him a keen political acumen. He managed to keep influencers like Danzo Shimura at bay while fostering talents such as his Sannin, one of whom (Jiraiya) played a key role in shaping the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. It’s believed that Hiruzen served as Hokage for approximately 40 years.

Following Minato’s unfortunate demise at the hands of the Nine-Tails, Hiruzen resumed the role of Hokage until he was killed by Orochimaru during Konoha Crush. During his term, Hiruzen showed exceptional leadership skills and combat capabilities, becoming proficient in all Five Basic Nature Transformations as well as Yin and Yang Release, which earned him the title “The God of Shinobi.” Although he was only taught directly by the Sannin, his knowledge from his tumultuous past proved invaluable not just for his successors, but also for the instructors who educated them.

1. Onoki

The Inspiring Rock Of Both Scales Who Faced Madara In His Prime

  • Debut: Shippuden Episode 199

Regardless of seeming elderly in the anime series Shippuden, the character Onoki, who served as the Third Tsuchikage, was no one to underestimate. In his younger years, Onoki could hold his own against Madara Uchiha at the height of his powers, forging a sort of rivalry that maintained a tenuous alliance between the Hidden Leaf and the Hidden Stone Villages. Before the commencement of the Third Shinobi World War, Onoki assumed the position of Tsuchikage, having on occasion employed the Akatsuki and encountering the Fourth Raikage in his youth.

Observing the individuals he interacts with, it’s clear that Onoki stands out as one of the oldest Kages in the Naruto universe. Not only is he among the eldest, but his tenure as a Kage spans an impressive duration, predating Hiruzen and ending during Naruto’s reign. This places him in office for more than four decades. Onoki’s advanced age has instilled in him a sense of pride and boastfulness, often leading him to belittle younger figures like Gaara and criticize Tsunade for her “elderly” status aspiring to become Hokage. However, it was through Gaara and Naruto’s influence that Onoki began to direct his vigor from his youth into more substantial endeavors.
