In the game Last Epoch, the Hammerdin build for the Sentinel character is highly recommended due to its balanced focus on both swiftness and potency. It primarily employs Hammer Throw and a mix of movement abilities, ensuring fast map traversal without compromising the strength needed to effortlessly defeat bosses.
This handbook is a beginner’s guide for the Sentinel’s Paladin class in the Hammerdin league, which incorporates the Smite ability. It offers a smooth progression into numerous advanced builds as you advance. The guide necessitates only a few essential items, making it an excellent choice for novice players in Last Epoch.
Last Epoch Hammerdin Leveling Build
In this build, Hammer Throw and Smite are our primary damage dealers. Initially, Hammer Throw is an effective offensive move. However, as the game progresses, it mainly triggers Smite. Since Hammer Throw autocasts Smite, we can avoid Smite’s casting speed constraints. This enables us to unleash a rapid succession of hammers and holy lightning on the screen.
Build Requirements
To successfully execute this construction, it’s essential to have a mechanism that automatically triggers Smite with Hammer Throw. This can be achieved through the use of any one of these three tools.
- Storm Champion Weapon: Weapons dropped by Storm Champion enemies come with the Storm Champion’s prefix, which gives a chance for Throwing Attacks to cast Smite up to 10 times per second.
- Sentinel Idol: Idols may drop with an affix that grants users a chance to cast Smite with Throwing Attacks.
Pre-Paladin Skill Setup
Hammerdin Build (Level 1-20) | |
---|---|
Skills | Hammer Throw Rive/Vengeance Lunge Javelin Holy Aura |
Passives | Fearless (5) Armour Clad (5) Valiant Charge (5) Time and Faith (5) |
As an enthusiast, I’d recommend specializing in Hammer Throw as soon as possible to unlock the Iron Spiral and Catapult passives. The Iron Spiral gives your hammers a spin for increased range and unpredictability, while Catapult allows you to hurl multiple hammers simultaneously. These abilities are vital to maximize both your single-target and area-of-effect damage output.
The duo of Rive and Judgment are primarily useful for restoring your mana through the Time and Faith Sentinel’s passive ability. Rive offers a significant amount of damage output, while Judgment is more beneficial if you aim to enhance your survivability in combat.
In our game, the skills we focus on for mobility are Javelin and Lunge. Focus second on mastering Javelin, as this will enable you to throw your javelin to a specific spot and then dash towards that location. Be sure to acquire the Banner of Restoration for additional healing, and use Divine Intervention to make your javelin continuously cast Smite wherever it lands.
In our game, we focus on using Javelin and Lunge for movement. Spend more time learning how to use Javelin effectively, as this will allow you to throw it at a certain spot and then run towards the thrown javelin. Make sure to get the Banner of Restoration for extra healing, and use Divine Intervention so that your javelin keeps casting Smite wherever it lands.
After successfully gaining access to the Paladin subclass, you can unlock the Aura of Sanctity, providing a notable increase in damage. When specialized, it offers additional damage enhancements. Utilize it whenever you encounter elites or bosses for combat. Specialize this ability at level 35.
Weapons and Gear Stats
In the campaign, if possible, attempt to acquire a weapon from a Storm Champion foe who is themselves a champion. If that’s not feasible, seek out a Nemesis with favorable loot drops, or find a two-handed melee weapon boasting the following characteristics:
1. High attack power for dealing significant damage.
2. Good defense to withstand enemy attacks.
3. Adequate speed to quickly attack and evade enemy counterattacks.
4. Ideally, it should also have an elemental effect such as lightning or storm for added offensive capabilities.
- Physical Damage
- Chance to Ignite
- Chance to Bleed
1. Option A: In addition to the equipment you currently have, you can layer these three stats as well. It might be beneficial to utilize a loot filter to ensure you don’t overlook crucial items. By the way, Throwing Attack Damage is quite handy at this stage of the game.
2. Option B: Aside from your existing gear, these three stats can also be added. Using a loot filter could help prevent you from missing out on important items. Notably, Throwing Attack Damage is useful in the early stages of play.
Level 20 and Beyond
Hammerdin Build (Level 20+) | |
---|---|
Skills | Hammer Throw Symbols of Hope Healing Hands Javelin Holy Aura Smite (not on bar) |
Sentinel Passives | Fearless (8) Juggernaut (2) Armour Clad (5) Valiant Charge (5) |
Paladin Passives | Conviction (5) Phoenix Strike (5) Rahyeh’s Strength (5) Force of Devotion (6) Faith Armour (4) Holy Precision (10) Prayer Aegis (5) Covenant of Light (5) Covenant of Dominion (7) |
This guide’s skill point distribution is determined by a character at level 64 who has a total of 77 skill points to allocate passively.
Instead of referring to Rive/Judgment, let’s use the term “Symbols of Hope” for the bonus damage and health regeneration. Additionally, let’s revise the Sentinel tree and redirect the five points from Time and Faith towards more crucial passives.
In the new setup, Healing Hands now serves as our second mobility skill, replacing Lunge. To enhance its functionality, consider activating Rahyeh’s Chariot passive which transforms Healing Hands into a targeted dashing ability. Coupled with Javelin, you’ll find navigating through maps an effortless and swift process.
When you advance to level 50, focus on specializing in Smite and start progressing along the Lagon’s Order passive. This transformation turns Smite into a bolt of lightning, with nearby passives making the skill strike multiple targets each time it connects, sending out bursts of lightning bolts. This enhancement significantly boosts both your ability to defeat single targets quickly and clear groups efficiently.
Later, consider using the “Sacrifice” and “Atonement” passives for Smite. The “Sacrifice” passive will significantly boost Smite’s damage output, but it will also drain your health with each cast. Be cautious about investing heavily in this passive without also taking “Atonement”, as the health cost might become excessive without it.
If you’d prefer, you could swap out one of your mobility abilities for an instant use ability called Smite instead.
Skill Specializations and Passives
Hey there fellow gamer! If you’re finding it tough to keep up with the passive abilities and specialization points layout, I’ve got your back. Here are some visual aids to help you out! Just remember, these images are your guide to mastering the game!
Equipment and Stats

After you begin utilizing Monoliths, Smite will surpass Hammer Throw’s damage considerably. Consequently, we’ll need to shift our focus in terms of gear stats towards enhancing Lightning, Elemental, and Spell Damage, rather than Physical or Throwing Damage.
Incorporating wands or staves into your arsenal significantly boosts the power of your spells, especially if they come with additional Elemental Damage (like Lightning), as well as a chance to cause additional damage types such as Ignite/Shock. This setup will allow you to effortlessly dismantle enemies that are on your level. Remember, as you craft your character, don’t neglect critical statistics as they play an important role in your overall performance.
From here, you have the option to proceed by enhancing your setup further using superior equipment with preferred attributes, or alternatively, you could opt for a complete Smite build or any of its potential variations.
In the typical fashion, aim to fortify your resistance to the elements swiftly, and strive to bolster your health and defense as much as feasible.
