In a recent chat, the co-creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Cornell of Ghost of Yotei unveiled fresh gameplay aspects for the game, such as a non-sequential campaign. After the announcement trailer for Ghost of Yotei was released in 2024, information about Sucker Punch’s forthcoming project had been limited, but it appears that things are now becoming more transparent following the confirmation of its release date.

Fans have been eagerly waiting for updates on the upcoming Sucker Punch title, but it appears that the developer has moved onto a new stage of development after confirming the release date for Ghost of Yotei. The game is scheduled to debut in October, and as a result, more information about the protagonist Atsu and her objectives within the game are becoming available. Additionally, the studio is disclosing fresh gameplay details that promise to bring something new to the franchise.

Delighted to share some intriguing insights I gleaned from a chat with Jason Cornell and Nate Fox of Sucker Punch, during their interview with Famitsu. They spilled the beans about their upcoming game, Ghost of Yotei. From a sneak peek at the PlayStation store description, it appears our protagonist, Atsu, is on a mission for vengeance against a group known as the Yotei Six.

What sets this installment apart from previous ones in the series is the non-linear campaign structure. For the first time, players can chase after the Yotei Six in any order they wish, adding an exciting layer of freedom to the gameplay experience. Moreover, a new arsenal of close-quarters weapons has been introduced, such as the kusarigama, which promises a fresh combat dynamic.

To top it off, Sucker Punch has boasted that the map for Ghost of Yotei is their biggest one yet! So buckle up, fellow fans, as we embark on an epic journey through this vast and immersive world.

Sucker Punch Advises on Depiction of Ainu People and Culture

In a manner reminiscent to the game “Ghost of Tsushima”, both Fox and Cornell embarked on a journey to Japan, not just for research purposes, but also to collaborate with advisors on accurately portraying the Ainu people and their culture, which encompasses present-day Hokkaido. Cornell was exposed to museums and traditional crafts, while venturing into the mountains to gather wild plants. Although they have already been appointed Tourism Ambassadors for Tsushima Island, this newfound knowledge about the Ainu people might prevent any issues similar to those Ubisoft faced during the development of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”.

Despite Ghost of Yotei being several months off, a palpable sense of excitement is building among fans. This anticipation is further fueled by the captivating footage featured in the trailer for its release date, as well as the glowing endorsement from former PlayStation and Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida. Yoshida was particularly impressed with Sucker Punch’s ability to create games that feel so effortless and intuitive, while also ensuring a smooth, bug-free gameplay experience even during early development stages. He expressed his admiration for the way Ghost of Yotei always played well and how the game’s producer was always eager to hear his feedback whenever he visited the studio.
