Unveiling the Most Powerful Gods in Mortal Kombat History!

Summary

  • Gods play a major role in Mortal Kombat lore, with powers surpassing earthly warriors.
  • Characters like Rain, a demigod obsessed with power, and Fujin, Raiden’s brother, add depth.
  • Fire God Liu Kang saves the timeline by defeating Kronika and becoming the new Keeper of Time.

As a gamer immersed in the world of Mortal Kombat, I can’t help but be captivated by the fantastical realms teeming with extraordinary characters. From the scaly Reptile and the menacing Mileena, to the sorcerous Shang Tsung, there’s no shortage of intrigue. Yet, right from the start, it’s been the gods who have woven their divine threads into the tapestry of this lore, a role they continue to play in the latest installments.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been battling it out in the Mortal Kombat universe for quite some time now. Over three decades, creators at Midway and NetherRealm Studios have brought to life divine beings with powers beyond those of any earthly fighter. These gods can control elements, bend time, and even reshape reality itself! Some of these deities have been playable since the early days, while others have appeared as NPCs or formidable adversaries we’ve faced or fought against throughout the series. Without a doubt, they are the mightiest beings in Mortal Kombat’s rich and expansive history.

9. Rain

A Demigod Obsessed With Usurping Outworld’s Throne

  • First Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
  • Powers: Hydrokinesis

In the initial two timelines of MK, Rain, though not a deity in the traditional sense, was Argus’s son. He was left behind by his father and nurtured by his mother Amara, who raised him as a peddler in Outworld. Upon learning he was a demigod and losing his mother, he felt a strong longing to claim rule over Outworld, believing it was his birthright.

By the meaning of his name, Rain possesses a unique ability related to water, harnessing it to unleash a tsunami with just a flick of his fingers. Among the various ninjas in the realm of Mortal Kombat, he may not be as formidable as some divine beings or his half-brothers Taven and Daegon. However, he has demonstrated an impressive capacity to confront powerful adversaries like Kotal Kahn and Lord Raiden.

8. Argus

Fans Have Seen Very Little Of Edenia’s Protector

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
  • Powers: Creation

Prior to its amalgamation with Outworld following ten defeats in Mortal Kombat, Edenia was a serene kingdom overseen by a deity named Argus. He safeguarded this realm until he and his wife Delia were tragically slain by their son, Daegon. The exact extent of Argus’ power remains uncertain, as he appeared infrequently in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and his role was limited in scope.

It became clear that a great war among warriors from different realms would lead to Armageddon, so Argus teamed up with Delia to come up with a solution. Not only did he birth the Hellspawn called Blaze, but also constructed the Pyramid which would attract all combatants to fight for supreme power, even his own two sons. He was aware that the winner between his sons would transform into a full-fledged deity.

7. Fujin

Raiden’s Little Brother Is A Protector Of People

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 4
  • Powers: Wind And Air Manipulation

Fujin, the younger sibling of Raiden, is a deity who oversees the wind and has been safeguarding the Earthrealm against malevolent forces such as Quan Chi, Shinnok, and Kronika. What makes Fujin particularly intriguing is his desire to distance himself from his divine counterparts, including his elder brother, as he feels that their immense godly power detaches them from their emotions, thereby choosing to remain less powerful in order to preserve his empathy for mankind.

Initially, Fujin was presented to spectators in Mortal Kombat 4, but it wasn’t until his impressive comeback in Mortal Kombat 11 that he really took center stage. In this game, he became a significant character, particularly in the Aftermath expansion. He played a pivotal role in countering Kronika’s forces, engaging in fierce battles against characters like Cetrion and Sindel, most notably while donning Kronika’s crown.

6. Taven

Evolved To Godhood By Fighting His Own Brother

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
  • Powers: Pyromancy, Super Speed

In an effort to conclude the Mortal Kombat series with a dramatic finale, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon introduced characters such as Taven and his brother Daegon. At first, Taven was a demigod, but as he journeyed through different realms and grew stronger, his powers transformed him into a more divine being, eventually preparing him to battle the evil Hellspawn known as Blaze. However, despite his efforts, Taven ultimately lost and met his tragic end atop the Pyramid in the established storyline.

In earlier installments of the game series, Taven had the chance to surpass other divine beings with his skills, but he didn’t get many chances to demonstrate them. Nevertheless, he managed to best powerful adversaries such as the Red Dragon Clan, his sibling, and even Raiden. Regrettably, in the last four games of the series, Taven has been reduced to just being mentioned or appearing briefly.

5. Raiden

Protected The Realms With His Lightning Powers

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)
  • Powers: Weather Manipulation, Electrokinesis

The position of Earthrealm’s Protector is not given lightly to those with power, and Raiden has been its holder for not just thousands of years but across numerous timelines. Though the rules of realms and Elder Gods often limit his actions, he never fails to step into battle when needed, upholding his image as a Thunder Deity and utilizing lightning as his supreme weapon.

Across both instances, Raiden engaged in fierce battles against characters like Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Shinnok, and Kronika. By standing up for justice, he established himself as a guardian of Earthrealm. As he took control of Shinnok’s amulet, Raiden transformed into Dark Raiden, gaining immense power but at the expense of his own soul.

4. Shinnok

The Necromancer Ruler Of The Netherrealm

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 4
  • Powers: Necromancy, Bone Construction, Soul Magic,

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a shiver down my spine when I face off against Shinnok in the game. Being an expelled Elder God, it’s no wonder he’s a formidable adversary for both Earthrealm and Outworld. He was booted out by his fellow Elder Gods due to his relentless warfare against them, causing chaos across all realms. Now, the Netherrealm serves as his throne, and with his immense power, he’s been working tirelessly to bring back the dead mortals and enslave them under his rule.

In the second scenario, it is disclosed that Shinnok is the offspring of the Titan, Kronika. Previously featured as the primary adversary in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat X, Shinnok had the power to contaminate any deceased spirit and mold them into his own malevolent minions. During Mortal Kombat X, he came close to winning his conflict against existence itself by metamorphosing into a formidable demon that controlled the corrupted life force of Earthrealm, until he was vanquished by the Cage lineage, a bloodline specifically bred for combat with deities.

3. Cetrion

The First Time Gamers Could Play An Elder God

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 11
  • Powers: Elemental Manipulation, Flight, Strength, Creation,

Cetrion, much like Shinnok represents darkness and death, embodies the opposite – light and life. She is one of the powerful Elder Gods who safeguarded all existence across the realms until her unwavering devotion to their mother caused her to break ranks in Kronika’s plan to rewind history and establish what she deemed an ideal timeline.

In this role-playing game, Cetrion – the deity embodiment of life itself – possesses the fundamental forces of fire, water, earth, air, and light within her grasp. Few opponents in the series could measure up to her in combat. Only another divine figure or someone bearing Kronika’s Crown of Souls was capable of matching Cetrion’s powers and might.

2. Kronika

The Titan Obsessed With Quantum Perfection

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 11
  • Powers: Creation, Time Manipulation

In the game Mortal Kombat 11, Kronika is never called a god, but she possesses power greater than any divine being, earning her the title of a Titan. As a Titan and Time’s Guardian, Kronika has molded existence, shaping the fates of all Mortal Kombat characters across the realms according to her ideal timeline, and restarting history on numerous occasions to ensure its perfection.

Utilizing the Hourglass, Kronika possesses the ability to halt time simply by existing or blend past and future occurrences for manipulation. When supplied ample soul power and the influence of her daughter, Cetrion, she can rewind time all the way back to the dawn of history, asserting total control over every being’s destiny. Her ultimate ambition is to eliminate Raiden from the timeline.

1. Fire God Liu Kang

Liu Kang Became A God To Save The Timeline

  • First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 11
  • Powers: Pyromancy, Creation, Time Manipulation, Electrokinesis

In the end, it was just one entity that managed to stop Kronika from establishing a timeline filled with disorder and conflict: the amalgamation of a young Liu Kang, the future spirit Liu Kang, and Lord Raiden. This union produced Fire God Liu Kang, an authentic deity who overcame not only a maximally energized Kronika at the inception of time but also Shang Tsung, who possessed the power of Kronika’s crown as his rival.

In this adaptation, Liu Kang assumes the role of the Time Guardian, initiating and sculpting his own timeline as depicted in Mortal Kombat 1. Instead of consistently meddling with mortal fates, he opted to let them decide their destinies independently. Yet, when the cosmic being Shang Tsung surfaced from the multiverse, Liu Kang stepped forward valiantly to protect Earthrealm and vanquished him.
