Vitalik Buterin Assumes Privacy Advocacy Role

A crypto innovator responded to a post on X by Rest of World, a not-for-profit publishing platform, in a recent interaction.

Governments around the world have been utilizing facial recognition technology to quell dissent, as reported lately. Based on information obtained by Steven Feldstein, a researcher from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, it has been found that 78 countries now employ public facial recognition systems within their government agencies.

In response to the loss of privacy in the physical world, Vitalik Buterin emphasized the importance of enhancing online privacy as one effective solution. He encouraged his audience to take action and promote privacy protection.

Buterin’s concern about decreasing online privacy isn’t baseless, as he has frequently expressed dissatisfaction with this issue. Just a few days ago, Ethereum’s leading developer was drawn into discussions concerning privacy on the Ethereum platform.

In simpler terms, the debate focused on if Ethereum, being the base technology for blockchain transactions, should automatically include privacy features for those transactions. Vitalik Buterin warned that adding this functionality as a standard could negatively affect the network’s ability to handle large volumes of transactions and run smoothly.

The Ethereum development team is continuously addressing scalability issues and implementing Zero-Knowledge proofs as part of their long-term solutions.

How Is Ethereum Helping the Privacy Cause

Several Ethereum protocols are investigating the implementation of Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology. Notably, Polygon‘s zkEVM has undergone an emergency update following an incident that caused a ten-hour outage. The upcoming upgrade for this smart contract platform on Polygon is anticipated to bring about significant changes for developers, potentially marking a turning point in the way they build applications.

The upcoming upgrade is predicted to make it function more similarly to the Ethereum mainnet, allowing developers to easily transfer and adapt their existing code without requiring extra adjustments.

In a similar fashion, Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, adopted QuarkID and zkSync for its blockchain digital identity system. zkSync is an Ethereum technology that employs ZK-rollups for scaling purposes. This innovative solution allows one party to confirm the accuracy of a statement to another without revealing any particular details about the statement itself.
