Organizational Difference Between Layer-1 And Layer-2

According to Buterin, the primary distinction between these two advancements lies not in their technical aspects but rather in their organizational structure.
As a researcher in the field of cryptocurrency, I’d like to emphasize that it’s not just a matter of what technologies can be developed, but rather what actually will come to fruition. This is determined by the boundaries between various components of the ecosystem and how they impact the motivations and capabilities of individuals involved.
Layer 2-centric ecosystems, as described by Buterin, possess a natural pluralistic character. Beyond their ability to foster various methods for expanding capacity, designing virtual machines, and other technological aspects, these ecosystems function as a central hub where developers can independently create sub-ecosystems. (Buterin previously emphasized this point by stating that Ethereum serves as a hub for such independent development efforts.)
According to Ethereum’s co-founder, as part of the Ethereum ecosystem, the sub-community is able to maintain unique characteristics. He further emphasized that this distinction goes beyond just technology and encompasses cultural aspects as well.
Ethereum Subcultures And L2s
Buterin notes that Paul Dylan-Ennis, a well-known researcher in the field, has devoted significant effort to examining Ethereum’s various subcultures. To date, Dylan-Ennis has identified three primary Ethereum subgroups: Cyberpunks, Regeners, and Degens.
The three subcultures exhibit distinct features. Notably, Ethereum functions as a versatile development platform, providing a common ground where these cultures can act and interact rather than merely engaging in dialogue.
Cypherpunks are deeply involved in Ethereum’s foundational research and development, contributing through writing privacy software. Regens focus on Gitcoin grants, funding for public goods retroactively, and various non-financial applications. In contrast, Degens primarily engage with trading memecoins, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and participating in digital games.
Regarding the topic of subcultures and second-level (L2) solutions in Ethereum, Buterin expressed that L2s represent the primary battleground for innovation. These protocols create a platform where resourceful subcultures can flourish and develop. In essence, an L2 is not only a constructive environment for growth but also a self-contained ecosystem focusing on creating something new. To reinforce his perspective, Buteric mentioned several promising L2 projects like Optimism, MegaETH, and Starknet.
In essence, the L2-centric approach to culture aims for a harmonious blend of diversity and unity.
