The trailer for Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil movie is out, and people have very different opinions about it. As a big fan of both the Resident Evil series and Cregger’s previous films – I especially loved Barbarian and Weapons – I’m looking forward to seeing it. I think some of the negative reactions online are a bit harsh.
It’s easy to find Resident Evil fans who are disappointed with Zach Cregger’s upcoming movie, especially after seeing the first trailer. Adding to the frustration, a leaked script has many fans worried that the film won’t be a faithful adaptation of the games. While I also wish we’d get a Resident Evil movie that closely follows the first game and other titles in the series, it’s unfair to dismiss Cregger’s vision before giving the movie a chance. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it won’t be good.
Resident Evil is a Franchise About Reinvention
A common complaint about the movie is that it doesn’t feel true to the spirit of Resident Evil. Some fans have pointed to a specific shot in the trailer, saying it looks more like a generic supernatural horror film than something from the Resident Evil universe. It’s possible the movie is going in a supernatural direction. While I haven’t seen the script, one theory suggests this could be explained by the appearance of Nyx, a creature from Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2, and many others have noticed this potential connection as well.
The specific reasons why things happen in Resident Evil aren’t really important. What is important is that the series is constantly changing and experimenting, and that’s why it’s stayed popular for so long. The first Resident Evil was a traditional survival-horror game focused on exploring, managing limited resources, and solving puzzles. But by Resident Evil 4, the focus had shifted to action. Then Resident Evil 7 took a completely different approach – a scary, first-person experience that felt more like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre than previous Resident Evil games. In fact, it was so unique, Capcom could have released it as an entirely new franchise.

Both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 are now fan favorites, but they weren’t always so well-received. When Resident Evil 4 first came out, some fans disliked how different it was from previous games, especially because it moved away from the Umbrella Corporation storyline. Resident Evil 7 also faced criticism. The change to a first-person viewpoint was controversial, and many were unhappy that it featured completely new characters and a new setting. Even the brief appearance of Chris Redfield at the end didn’t quite feel right to some players.
The new Resident Evil movie, directed by Zach Cregger, might actually surprise people. Despite the initial negative reactions, it could end up being a hit with fans if it’s a good film. In some ways, these creative changes actually feel more true to the spirit of Resident Evil. It’s not sticking strictly to the games’ storyline with its winter setting and new creatures, but that doesn’t guarantee it will be bad. Let’s wait and see the movie before jumping to conclusions.
Every Resident Evil movie made with real actors has received negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning there’s plenty of room for improvement in future installments.
Zach Cregger’s Track Record Speaks for Itself
Zach Cregger has had a remarkably successful start to his horror film career. His first movie, Barbarian (2022), received very positive reviews, with a 92% rating from critics and a 72% audience score. He followed that up with Weapons in 2025, which earned even higher marks – 93% from critics and 85% from audiences. So far, every horror film Cregger has made has been a hit. While his upcoming Resident Evil movie could potentially be his first failure, he’s proven himself enough to deserve some trust.
Considering what we know about the director’s previous work, the biggest problem with his Resident Evil movie would likely be that it’s a good horror film but doesn’t include enough elements from the games to please hardcore fans. Honestly, after years of really bad Resident Evil movies, I’d be happy with that!
