It was a day that will live in infamy, or at least in the annals of X, when the official account of the ever-so-vocal Bitcoin critic, Paul Krugman, was hacked to promote a token so dubious it might as well have been named “The New York Times Token” (NYTC). 🤔

The audacious hackers, no doubt chuckling into their keyboards, posted a link to what can only be described as a bogus article, claiming the venerable media outlet had decided to join the crypto craze. One can almost hear the sound of Krugman’s eyebrows rising to his hairline at the news. 🧐

Such shenanigans are, alas, not uncommon on X. Despite the best efforts of the platform’s finest minds, these crypto conundrums continue to plague the digital landscape like a particularly persistent brand of digital dandelions. 🌱

As U.Today recently reported, the official account of Time magazine, one of the most illustrious publications in the land, fell victim to a similar scam in late January. The magazine’s account was compromised to advertise a cryptocurrency scheme that would have made even the most seasoned scammer blush. 🙈

Krugman, of course, is no stranger to the crypto wars. The Nobel laureate and economist has been a vocal critic of Bitcoin since its early days, once famously penning an op-ed that described the original cryptocurrency as “evil.” In 2021, he doubled down, declaring crypto to be a “long-running Ponzi scheme.” 🕵️‍♂️
