Why God of War Separating Kratos and Atreus Would Be a Double-Edged Sword

Why God of War Separating Kratos and Atreus Would Be a Double-Edged Sword

Highlights

  • Atreus-led game may showcase growth separate from Kratos, exploring new dimensions of character development and challenges.
  • Potential for Kratos to take on a new role, leading to further mature and wise character development without Atreus by his side.
  • Atreus with Angrboda could present a unique dynamic, but different from the iconic father-son relationship in the series.

As a huge fan of the God of War series, I am excited about the potential direction that the franchise may take next. Having witnessed Kratos and Atreus‘ growth and development throughout the last two games, I believe that an Atreus-led adventure could be a fascinating exploration of new dimensions of character growth and challenges.

As a huge fan of the God of War series, I can’t help but feel excited about the potential for more adventures in this rich and captivating universe. With Ragnarok leaving several storylines unresolved and the franchise’s undeniable success under Sony’s belt, it feels only natural that we’ll be treated to at least one more major installment. However, the specifics of what the next God of War game might hold are still a mystery. Some speculate that Atreus could take on a larger role as a playable character, perhaps against a new and intriguing mythological backdrop. Only time will tell!

The primary cause for this theory stems from the finale of “Ragnarok,” during which Atreus embarks on a journey beyond the Norse lands, possibly accompanied by Angrboda, to discover the last of the Giants. Conversely, Kratos appears to remain in the Norse domains based on the “Valhalla” expansion, implying that he will succeed Tyr as the Norse God of War. These scenarios could lead to a solo adventure for Atreus or a game with more focus on both father and son. However, it’s plausible that “God of War” will not immediately resume its Kratos-Atreus collaboration dynamic.

Kratos and Atreus Splitting Up Could Be Good, but it Comes with Some Challenges

Atreus and Kratos Can Continue to Develop Independently

As a gamer, I can tell you that there’s so much untapped potential in an Atreus-led God of War story. Throughout the last two games, I’ve seen Atreus evolve significantly, from coming to terms with his godhood and dealing with his mother’s death, to forming a deeper bond with his father Kratos. But let me tell you, Atreus is still very much defined by Kratos, and while Ragnarok shows him becoming more independent, he’s still playing the role of secondary antagonist. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing Kratos in action, but imagine if Atreus embarked on his own journey, far away from his father?

Just as intriguing would be following Kratos’ journey without Atreus in “God of War.” If Kratos steps into Tyr’s vacated role and governs once more, he might evolve significantly, becoming a wiser and more mature deity. In his new position of power, taking into account his past errors, Kratos could undergo substantial growth. Consequently, the upcoming “God of War” could delve deeper into this facet of Kratos’ evolution, making for an engaging exploration.

Kratos and Atreus Both Leave Some Big Shoes to Fill

From a fan’s perspective, I believe Atreus won’t embark on this journey all by himself; Angrboda seems set to fill the role previously held by Kratos as his companion. This change could bring an intriguing new dimension to their story in Ragnarok. While Atreus and Angrboda shared meaningful moments, the dynamics of a friendship or romantic relationship are distinct from that of a parent-child bond. These connections can be profound yet fragile, making them more challenging to execute effectively.

In Ragnarok, Kratos and Freya’s connection is complex, so it’s not surprising that they get separated for long stretches in the game. However, whether or not this separation feels effective depends on various aspects, such as how strong Atreus’ individual character development is without Kratos’ prominent presence.
