2025 has seen some remarkable stories, but few compare to the depth and maturity found in “South of Midnight.” This game delves into a variety of weighty themes that are likely to touch the hearts of numerous gamers on a personal level. Visually, “South of Midnight” stands out with its exceptional lighting effects and cel-shading, effectively conveying its fairy tale atmosphere and appearance.
The gameplay in “South of Midnight” is not as impressive compared to its narrative. Although the platforming is enjoyable and responsive, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table for players. Additionally, the combat has been criticized for being too repetitive, with each fight requiring minimal change from the player. However, there’s a particular mechanic in “South of Midnight” that falls short, and this is one of the game’s key features.
South of Midnight’s Unravel Mechanic Falls Short
Why South of Midnight’s Unravel Mechanic Feels Lackluster
An essential aspect of the story in “South of Midnight” revolves around Hazel, who has recently learned she is a Weaver – an individual with magical powers that allow her to heal deep-seated traumas. Weavers accomplish this by locating and eliminating Stigma, powerful sources of negative emotions found in the world, and dismantling them using their enchanted hooks, which unravel the very essence of these sources.
In the game “South of Midnight“, this action of untangling something significant becomes integral to its combat system. When an adversary known as a Haint is vanquished, players are prompted to unwind the Stigma kept within them. This can be accomplished with a quick press of the “Y” button. However, this crucial aspect of “South of Midnight“‘s storyline and gameplay seems somewhat underwhelming due to several factors.
A notable concern with the way South of Midnight handles its unraveling mechanic is that it doesn’t seem to offer enough reward. When players use the unravel ability, they only get a minor health boost and a slight decrease in their cooldown timers. These benefits are typically insufficient to compensate for the lengthy animation that occurs every time an enemy is unraveled, which often disrupts the smooth flow of combat encounters that usually feature fast-paced combat.
In the game “South of Midnight,” the health restoration after a victorious battle seems unnecessary since each combat encounter restores the player’s health completely upon returning to the arena.
In the skill tree of the game South of Midnight, a few enhancements have been added that noticeably elevate the sensation of value when using the unravel mechanic, yet they don’t revolutionize it significantly. For example, one early improvement triggers an Area of Effect (AoE) blast every time the player dismantles an enemy’s Stigma core. The power of this attack is substantial, but enemies often escape the impact zone.
South of Midnight’s Unravel Mechanic Could Have Been Much Better
It’s unfortunate that a significant aspect of the story and gameplay in “South of Midnight” doesn’t meet the mark, considering there are obvious solutions for enhancement. One straightforward fix could be reducing the length of the unravel animation, which would smoothen out each combat encounter’s progression.
As a dedicated fan, I’d suggest amping up the thrill in “South of Midnight” by introducing higher stakes to its unravel mechanic. If enemies could resurrect if their cores remain intact, it would undoubtedly ramp up the difficulty level of the game’s combat, making the act of unraveling not just an option, but a necessity for survival.
