Shonen Jump continues to deliver exciting new content! Their latest anime, Marriagetoxin, began streaming on Crunchyroll in 2026. It’s based on the popular manga of the same name, which has been available on the Shonen Jump+ platform since 2022.
Despite some bigger anime releases this season, Marriagetoxin has quickly become a standout, launching with a strong first episode on April 7th that really appealed to shonen fans. If you’re on the fence, here’s why you should check it out.
Marriagetoxin is Pure Shonen Jump Formula
Shonen Jump manga is known for delivering action, exciting fights, comedy, and overall enjoyment. The anime Marriagetoxin follows this same successful formula, but it stands out by adding its own special twists and turns, making it a surprisingly unique experience.
I’ve noticed a pattern with shows like those in Shonen Jump – they consistently deliver what fans are looking for, and it’s clearly worked for years in manga and anime. Marriagetoxin feels a bit like Spy x Family in some ways, but it quickly establishes its own unique world filled with action and romance. It’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
The Story is Very Original
Marriagetoxin tells the story of a highly skilled assassin named Hikaru Gero who is reluctantly pushed into an arranged marriage. Hikaru is a private person and has no desire to find a wife, even believing he’s destined to be alone. However, he’s unexpectedly forced to marry to safeguard his sister and allow her to pursue her own happiness.
Gero’s willingness to make sacrifices will fundamentally shift what’s important to him. He’ll become intensely focused on finding a partner, but unfortunately, romance won’t come easily. Even with help from Mei Kinosaki, a con artist he should have eliminated, Gero will struggle to connect with anyone. To ensure she continues assisting his search, he’ll also be forced to protect her. The story takes an unexpected turn when he finally learns Mei’s hidden secret.
Right from the start, the two main characters have a strong connection, but it’s not a typical romance. They bond during a crisis, and that unusual relationship is the heart of this funny anime.
Haruki Ishiya, known for his role as Kaoru Namikido in Tougen Anki, provides the voice for Hikaru Gero. He’s also voiced characters in series like Mechanical Marie (as Arthur) and My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me! (as Akiteru Oboshi). Shion Wakayama, who voiced Yuki Tadokoro in the 2025 anime The Summer Hikaru Died, voices Mei Kinosaki. Both actors skillfully capture the emotional range of their characters, delivering convincing performances in both funny, exciting, and dramatic moments.
There are Many Clans of Professional Assassins and the Comedy is Constant
One of the best things about Marriagetoxin is how it presents a world filled with families of assassins. Similar to Sakamoto Days, which also explores this kind of setting, Marriagetoxin aims for a more structured and established world. It’s most comparable to Hitman Reborn!, a classic manga and anime that was hugely popular in Shonen Jump magazine for many years.
The world of Marriagetoxin is built on powerful families, each with its own unique method of assassination. The main character, Hikaru, comes from the Poison Clan, experts in eliminating targets with toxins. However, Hikaru isn’t a heartless killer; he follows a personal code and only targets those he believes deserve it.
Besides the main family, the series features diverse groups like the Beast Clan, who partner with animals, the Bug Clan, and the Fire Clan. Even the Ghost Clan appears, utilizing weapons wielded by spirits. This demonstrates that the creator isn’t holding back when it comes to variety. The introduction of characters from these different groups is shaping up to be one of the most exciting parts of the anime.
Is an Anime That Embraces Madness
The author, Joumyaku, shares that the protagonist’s experiences were partially based on his own life. This reflects a common societal pressure in Japan to marry and start a family relatively young, particularly for families hoping to continue their lineage.
The anime Marriagetoxin playfully explores the ups and downs of modern dating and marriage, with a comedic style reminiscent of classic Shonen Jump series. Like the original manga, it occasionally features bizarre and nonsensical moments, but its main purpose is to entertain viewers with a lighthearted blend of assassins, action, and humor – though it’s not quite as over-the-top as some other action shows.
I learned from the director, Motonobu Hori, that he really wants Marriagetoxin to be an anime adults can just relax and enjoy. He envisions it as perfect for watching at night – you know, when you get home from work, pour yourself a drink, and want something funny to watch. It’s got a little bit of everything – comedy, romance, and action – making it easy to switch off and unwind for about 20 minutes.
The first season of the series will consist of 13 episodes. However, the original manga is much further along, with 17 volumes published since 2022. If viewers enjoy the anime and want to see more, there’s plenty of source material for future seasons. Before making any decisions about continuing the series, the creators will first need to assess how popular the anime becomes and check its ratings.
Is Marriagetoxin a Good Anime?
Marriagetoxin is an anime that quickly grabs your attention with its blend of comedy and action. Based on a popular manga, it’s known for being lighthearted and funny, making it perfect for when you want to unwind. While it features exciting elements like assassins, fights, and chases, the show always maintains a charming and humorous feel.
This anime features a main character who’s incredibly skilled with poisons, capable of defeating any opponent. However, he’s actually more interested in finding a romantic partner than battling criminals. What makes him so appealing is his surprisingly negative outlook, his unique way of coping with stress, and his strong bonds with his sister and a fondness for Japanese gummies – all of which make him feel very real and relatable. It’s designed to be a fun, lighthearted watch, meant to be enjoyed without analyzing it too much.
