With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Out of the Way, Its Time For One Far Cry Spin-Off To Get a Second Chance

Highlights

  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a Ubisoft game with familiar open-world mechanics, but a unique parkour system sets it apart slightly.
  • Fans of Far Cry Primal may find similarities in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, paving the way for potential sequels to the underrated spin-off.
  • Ubisoft has the opportunity to show Far Cry Primal some love with a sequel, building on the success of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

As someone who has been following the Far Cry series since its inception, I must say that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has certainly piqued my interest and rekindled my love for the underrated gem that is Far Cry Primal. It’s fascinating to see how Massive Entertainment has managed to create a game so reminiscent of Far Cry Primal while also carving out its unique identity.

Although developed by Massive Entertainment, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora showcases Ubisoft’s signature style extensively. While it refines Ubisoft’s conventional open-world structure by minimizing hand-holding and introducing a distinct parkour system, it maintains similar approaches in other aspects. The game fills its expansive world with repetitive environments and activities, which gives the impression of excessive bloat. In many ways, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora could be considered an unofficial Far Cry title from a non-Ubisoft developer, but this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect.

Considering the similarities between “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” and “Far Cry,” and its innovative twist on Ubisoft’s open-world style, it could be worth revisiting a less recognized “Far Cry” spin-off. Despite not having a sequel or any recent updates, there is still a small but dedicated fan base who would probably support it. While “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” might have been Massive’s trial run for their upcoming open-world “Star Wars” game, “Star Wars Outlaws,” it has also laid the groundwork for this unique “Far Cry” spin-off to finally get the recognition and development it needs.

It’s Time to Give Far Cry Primal Another Try

Far Cry Primal Is a Highly Underrated Far Cry Spin-off

While not all fans loved it initially, Far Cry Primal, released eight years ago, has built a dedicated fanbase over time. One possible reason for its growing popularity is that it offers a refreshing change from the repetitive mainline Far Cry games. Unlike other titles in the series which are set in modern or futuristic worlds, Far Cry Primal transports players to prehistoric times. Additionally, it brought innovative elements into the franchise, such as the option to tame wild beasts and incorporate them into battles.

The standout feature of Far Cry Primal might be its departure from the political focus common in many Far Cry games. Rather than delving into politics, this game tells the story of a solitary Wenja hunter named Takkar who finds himself stranded in a harsh environment following an attack by a wild beast while on a hunting expedition. Since its launch, no other Far Cry game has been quite like Far Cry Primal, which could well be the reason for its appeal to certain fans. In essence, Far Cry Primal is a remarkably underappreciated entry in the Far Cry series that merits further exploration.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Paved the Way for a Far Cry Primal Sequel

Essentially, when you consider it from a gameplay perspective, the upcoming title Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora shares many similarities with Far Cry Primal. While both have been likened to the Far Cry series due to their open-world designs and mechanics, Frontiers of Pandora stands out in its strong resemblance to Far Cry Primal. This is evident in its focus on non-gun weaponry, rideable beasts, and overall atmosphere. The bow mechanics in particular are very similar between the two games. Furthermore, although set in different time periods, the focus on nature in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is reminiscent of the Stone Age setting in Far Cry Primal. However, the landscapes in Frontiers of Pandora are characterized by vibrant, intense colors as opposed to the green and sepia tones of Far Cry Primal.

Ever since its debut, no other Far Cry title quite compares to Far Cry Primal, and it’s this unique quality that may have boosted its appeal with specific enthusiasts.

It’s plausible that Ubisoft could revive Far Cry Primal with a sequel, considering their current portfolio. Now that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is released, there’s an opportunity for Far Cry Primal to build upon its foundations. To break away from the predictable patterns in the Far Cry series, they might need to refine and expand on the open-world design introduced in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
