Cody Rhodes, a popular second-generation WWE wrestler and the current Undisputed WWE Champion, is known worldwide. He’s also a big video game fan, something he’s often talked about in interviews. Some of his favorite games include classics like Metal Gear Solid, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Halo: Combat Evolved, but he considers The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to be the best game of all time.
How the Triforce Got Cody Rhodes in Trouble With Nintendo
Cody Rhodes’ passion for wrestling and video games briefly caused a problem when Nintendo asked him to stop displaying the Triforce symbol from The Legend of Zelda on his wrestling boots. During an episode of his YouTube interview show, What Do You Wanna Talk About?, fellow WWE wrestler Elton Prince shared that he first became a fan of Rhodes because of the Triforce on his boots. Rhodes explained that he removed the symbol after Nintendo sent him a legal notice, but emphasized that Nintendo wasn’t targeting him personally, and the request was made politely.

When asked about incorporating the Triforce into his wrestling character, Cody Rhodes explained that he identified with its core values: power, courage, and wisdom. These qualities are represented in the Legend of Zelda series by Zelda (wisdom), Link (courage), and Ganon (power). Rhodes believes these principles aren’t just relevant to his persona, but to professional wrestling as a whole. He said wrestlers need courage and ambition, the wisdom to learn from those who came before, and the strength to endure the physical demands of the job. He simply felt it was a fitting concept.
Okay, so Prince isn’t a big gamer right now, but he’s a total fan of older Zelda games – he specifically mentioned Wind Waker and Twilight Princess from the 2000s. That’s what really caught Rhodes’ attention, because he sees a connection to wrestling. He explained that when Wind Waker first came out, a lot of fans who’d grown up with Zelda didn’t love the more cartoonish look, but they really embraced how much darker and more realistic Twilight Princess was. He put it perfectly: fans know what they want, and if enough of them speak up, things can seriously change. And he knows that better than anyone – he said his entire career took a turn because fans made their voices heard.
