- Spencer has publicly praised Elden Ring before and has shown his love for the game.
- In addition, he also revealed that Ninja Gaiden was his favorite franchise by Japanese devs at the moment.
Phil Spencer, an experienced figure at Xbox and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has named “Elden Ring” as his top pick among games launched during the current console generation. Remarkably, this title from FromSoftware, which debuted in 2022, is also playable on older gaming platforms alongside current-gen consoles.
Over the past few years, Phil Spencer has become nearly inseparable from the Xbox brand since he took charge of Microsoft’s gaming division in early 2014. From the surge in popularity of Xbox Game Pass to significant acquisitions like that of Activision-Blizzard, Spencer has been an integral part of many of the company’s landmark achievements. Notably, one of the most acclaimed video game launches in recent memory is Elden Ring, which enjoyed massive success at its debut and continued to do so with the release of its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. In a show of admiration for this critically-acclaimed title, the head of Xbox recently awarded Elden Ring a prestigious honor.
During an interview with XboxEra, Phil Spencer singled out Elden Ring as his top game of the current generation. He expressed his fascination with unexplored realms and new intellectual properties, noting that the game commanded a significant amount of his time, but in a positive sense. Before endorsing FromSoftware’s masterpiece, he chose not to mention any first-party Xbox games, perhaps to steer clear of inadvertent self-promotion. In the same conversation, he fondly remembered his Astrologer character in Elden Ring pelting rocks at others and described the experience as incredibly enjoyable. Later, he also disclosed that Ninja Gaiden was his current favorite Japanese developer’s franchise.
Phil Spencer’s Fondness of Elden Ring is No Secret
It’s worth mentioning that it’s not unexpected that Phil Spencer is a fan of Elden Ring, given his previous praise for the game. In fact, back in 2020, he mentioned playing an early version of the fantasy game and described it as Miyazaki’s most ambitious project. Furthermore, some observant fans even spotted Elden Ring merchandise on Spencer’s shelf a few months after its release, which was also visible during his recent conversation with XboxEra.
During that period, Spencer was getting ready for the release of another significant action game, this time from the Xbox-owned studio named id Software. On May 15, 2025, the game titled Doom: The Dark Ages is slated to arrive in stores for gamers on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
