Microsoft is now releasing Xbox Mode for Windows 11 PCs, bringing a gaming experience similar to the Xbox console to desktops, laptops, and portable devices with the newest Windows 11 update. The rollout will happen gradually in different areas, so not all PC gamers will get it immediately.
Xbox Mode makes it simpler to play PC games with a controller on a full screen. You can easily switch between this dedicated gaming view and your regular Windows 11 desktop. It also gives you quick access to your Xbox Game Pass games and library. When you’re in Xbox Mode, apps run full screen, showing only one window at a time to minimize distractions. After initial testing with Windows Insider Preview builds in late 2025, Xbox Mode became available to everyone on Thursday, April 30th.
Xbox Mode Is Rolling Out Now Across Supported Devices
Microsoft has outlined how Windows 11 users can prepare for the upcoming Xbox Mode. To get ready, users should first check their system settings and install all available Windows updates. It’s important to enable the setting that automatically downloads the latest updates as soon as they’re released. When Xbox Mode is available, you can turn it on within the Settings app by navigating to Gaming, then selecting and toggling on Xbox Mode.
You can turn on Xbox Mode through the Game Bar settings, by pressing Windows Key + F11, or using Task View (Windows Key + Tab). On compatible handheld devices like the ROG Ally and Ally X, Xbox Mode will automatically start when you turn on the device, once the feature is released. Currently, Xbox Mode isn’t available in all regions, so make sure your Windows 11 device is updated to get it as soon as possible.
Keeping your graphics drivers updated is a smart move. It can help prevent problems and even give you access to new features. If you have an AMD, Intel, or Nvidia graphics card, you can find the newest drivers on the manufacturer’s website or through their software – like the Nvidia App or AMD Adrenalin.
Xbox Mode Comes At The Right Time For Microsoft
The launch of Xbox Mode happens as Microsoft and the Xbox brand are undergoing significant changes. Recently, on April 21st, Microsoft announced it would be lowering the prices for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will now cost $23.99 per month, and PC Game Pass will be $13.99. However, this change comes with a condition: new Call of Duty games won’t be available on Game Pass the day they’re released. Microsoft has explained that currently available Call of Duty games on Game Pass aren’t affected, and future titles will be added to the service after a year.
Microsoft acknowledges it needs to improve after recent financial results weren’t as strong as expected. However, the new Xbox mode for PCs is designed to make gaming run more smoothly. It remains to be seen how many Windows users will actually use this new feature as it becomes available worldwide.
