  • Joe Goldberg’s past is catching up to him, with characters like Marienne, Nadia, and his son Henry resurfacing in Season 5.
  • Ellie Alves, Delilah’s sister, may seek revenge on Joe, but likely not through violence as hinted in previous episodes.

As a die-hard fan who’s been following Joe Goldberg’s chaotic love life since the very beginning, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and nostalgia as we approach the final season of You. The teaser trailer served as a stark reminder that Joe has more skeletons in his closet than a haunted mansion, with characters like Marienne, Nadia, and his own son Henry resurfacing. But among all these familiar faces, it’s Ellie Alves that I find myself eagerly waiting to see again.

During Netflix’s teaser trailer for You Season 5, Penn Badgley’s character, Joe Goldberg, was pointed out as having several unresolved matters from his past. His former obsession Marienne, unknown to Joe, is still alive and, in the final scene of Season 4, shockingly reads an article exonerating him for Love’s murder. Additionally, there’s Nadia, a student turned detective whom he falsely accused of her boyfriend’s murder and hinted that he was eagerly waiting to see what she would do next. It’s also important to note his son, Henry, who he initially abandoned on Dante and Lansing’s doorstep in Season 3 and wasn’t mentioned until the end of Season 4, except as a response to public opinion about his actions. However, among all these characters, there’s one that viewers are eagerly anticipating to reappear in the final season.

In Season 2, character Ellie Alves is a mature yet mischievous teenager with an interest in filmmaking, and she’s the younger sibling of reporter Delilah. Joe, our protagonist, develops a unique connection with Ellie, distinct from his protective feelings towards Paco from Season 1. Due to their age difference, they share a bond through discussing favorite films and books. However, Ellie is still young enough to be gullible, which puts her in danger when she trusts Henderson, a suspicious comedian, who had previously assaulted Delilah. Throughout the season, Joe’s efforts to safeguard Ellie portray his desire to embody a heroic figure and a “good guy.” Unfortunately, this image is shattered after Delilah meets her tragic end.

Ellie Never Quite Found Out What Happened to Her Sister

In their final encounter during Season 2, Joe disclosed that he became entangled with the Quinn family, describing them as malicious individuals who carried out harmful acts. He informed Ellie that Delilah would not be returning and advised her to avoid Child Protective Services by not returning home. He gave her money for a train ticket to Union Station and instructed her to continue moving eastward. Additionally, Joe promised to secure a new identity for her so she could start anew. In a confessional moment, he acknowledged his wrongdoings and revealed his role in Henderson’s murder. Unquestionably, Ellie felt overwhelmed and sought answers regarding her sister. Despite being less than innocent, Joe did not disclose the truth about Delilah’s death to Ellie. Since being banished from Los Angeles, it is likely that Ellie has spent the subsequent two seasons in some part of the Eastern United States, possibly grappling with complex feelings about Joe.

Has Joe Been Sending Her Money This Whole Time?

As a devoted admirer of Joe’s character in this captivating series, I’d like to share my thoughts on his relationship with Ellie and the question of whether he kept his promise to send her money. In the third season, Joe assures us that he was fulfilling his commitment. However, as suburban life grew monotonous for him, doubts about his consistency in sending her funds linger throughout the rest of the season.

Whatever Her Revenge, It Will Most Likely Not Be Violent

If Ellie turns out to be a threat to Joe in Season 5, I don’t think she’d resort to taking his life. In fact, before Season 3 even started, the creators made it clear that Ellie wouldn’t kill any character. They emphasized that Ellie is too deeply hurt and wronged for her to become a murderer like Joe. Instead, I believe Ellie would use her brains to outsmart him. Joe might have all the wealth in the world, but he’s never been one to cover his tracks, so a mistake on his part in Season 5 seems inevitable. Plus, there are fans who hope to see Ellie joining forces with other characters, maybe even Marienne and Nadia, forming a formidable team. It seems that creating a squad for Ortega’s characters is something the fans really enjoy, as they also want Wednesday Addams to have her own group.

In its final season, it’s clear that Joe Goldberg is back in New York and ready for more of his unique blend of inner monologues, hostage-taking, and murderous antics. Who or what will finally put an end to his lethal compulsions remains uncertain. Although it hasn’t been officially announced, there’s hope that Jenna Ortega might return as Ellie in a significant role for Season 5. Due to scheduling conflicts with her other Netflix series, Wednesday, Ortega was unable to appear last season, but she has expressed eagerness to reprise her character. Fans can only wait until Season 5 premieres to see if there are any surprises, but given the nature of the show, it’s bound to be an exhilarating ride.
