Somewhere upon those ancient, rain-slicked streets of Paris, where men’s souls tremble with feverish expectation and the bourgeois yet sip their café with smug nonchalance, calamity (in its uniquely modern flavor) paid a visit. Four masked ruffians—each undoubtedly weighed down by the burden of existence and one too many re-runs of crime dramas—sought to claim ransom with the efficiency of a failed Dostoevskian villain.
Their prey? The daughter and heir of Pierre Noizat, a crypto exchange tycoon, and her unfortunate child. Oh, wretched innocence! 👶 The scene: broad daylight, dread as palpable as Parisian humidity, the hiss of tires, and a white delivery van, mocking normalcy.
Out leapt three of the masked philosophers—one must imagine the fourth behind the wheel, pondering existential dread—and tried to force their trembling captives into the van. But what is fate to the determined spirit? The woman, spurred by ancestral fury or perhaps the memory of one too many phishing emails, wrestled chaos to the floor: seizing a handgun from one attacker and disposing of it, as one might toss an unwelcome baguette into the Seine.
Passersby, that most unpredictable of the human herd, found courage at last. One fellow, wielding a fire extinguisher—a veritable Dostoevskian Chekhov’s Gun—joined the fray. The assailants, realizing their criminal destinies were better left to tabloid fiction, beat a hasty retreat.
Alas, freedom is seldom without consequence. The would-be victims, battered but unbowed, were whisked to the hospital—no doubt pondering the oft-neglected volatility of both cryptocurrency and Parisian mornings.
But is this madness not epidemic among the token-rich? In January, kidnappers—having read too much about Bitcoin and not enough about ethics—nabbed David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, with his wife, seeking their ransom in digital shekels. (The authorities, displaying improbable competence, rescued them, and the miscreants now enjoy forced introspection in custody.)
Only last month, masked men, perhaps inspired by too many nihilistic novels, spirited away the father of a crypto millionaire—a veritable Parisian tradition at this rate. The police, never ones to refuse a good chase or a bad croissant, freed him during a bravura raid.
It does seem the crypto class must now contend not only with bear markets but also with actual bears. Or, at the very least, buffoons in balaclavas. 🤷♂️💸
