Despite stiff competition from popular cooperative games like Helldivers 2 and the upcoming Space Marine 2, it has successfully established its unique space within the Warhammer 40K fanbase, catering to both new and seasoned enthusiasts. Now, there are rumors of a Horde Mode, and the details seem quite intriguing.
Space Marine 2’s Horde Mode Could Be More Creative
As a devoted fan, I was thrilled to delve into the latest 7.0 patch data mine for Space Marine 2, which shed valuable light on the intricacies of the upcoming Horde Mode. Details such as capture zones, consumables, minibosses, even recycled objectives from Operations like corpse searches, were all revealed. It’s reassuring to know that resources I’ve accumulated in Operations can also be utilized effectively in Horde Mode, freeing up Saber to concentrate on crafting fresh weapons and maps instead.
Among the intriguing discoveries made were details about a system for calling forth entities, such as Space Marine units. These units range from NPC versions of primary classes to Dreadnoughts, and all seem to require resources for their summoning. Given that each call requires resources, it seems plausible that this mode will utilize a currency system, which can be earned by completing objectives, for continued summons of these NPCs and equipment.
This fact is significant as Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2 will come the closest in terms of shared features. Over time, these games have been frequently compared and appear to maintain a friendly competitive spirit for dominance in the co-op third-person shooter niche. If Space Marine 2 is borrowing ideas from its competitor, it might introduce an innovative angle by focusing more on teammates, ammo, and resources rather than air strikes. However, it’s important to note that Space Marines could still summon orbital bombardments.
Why Horde Mode in Space Marine 2 Needs to Be Better Than Exterminatus
The initial Horde Mode for the series was referred to as “Exterminatus” in Space Marine 1, and in 2011, it was an enticing proposition that captivated Warhammer fans by enabling them to fulfill their alien-eradicating dreams. It placed a team of three against 20 successive waves of Orks, along with an additional Chaos wave as a bonus, which gradually increased in difficulty over time.
Despite having some variety with side objectives, Exterminatus struggled due to its lack of substantial content and predictability. These optional tasks sometimes resulted in frustration rather than enjoyment. The main mode failed to offer a compelling reward system, causing many players to gravitate towards Space Marine 1’s Player versus Player (PVP), which, albeit flawed, stood out as something distinctive during its time.
In the upcoming Space Marine 2, it appears that Horde Mode will see noticeable improvements. The revamped netcode in this sequel promises to alleviate the occasional jittery feel during multiplayer Ork battles, which was a concern in the original game. Additionally, combat has been substantially refined compared to the first installment. While it’s ideal for waves to be mostly predictable, introducing a bit of unpredictability to keep things engaging would be appreciated. So far, Saber Interactive has shown promise in this regard with Operations.
What Exterminatus Did Better Than Space Marine 2
Players are eagerly requesting the opportunity to embody Chaos in the PVE (Player versus Environment) of Space Marine 2. Previously, Exterminatus featured a Chaos variant of this mode, pitting Orks and Imperial forces against each other, offering a distinct gaming experience. If Saber Interactive were to introduce a parallel Chaos version of Horde Mode, it would provide an engaging platform for creating fresh Chaos summoning options such as Daemons, allowing players to engage in combat with the Imperial Forces, who until now have mainly served as background elements in missions.
