In the grand tradition of saying “Look, I’ve got a plan!” and then hoping people don’t notice the fire in the background, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder, developer, and all-round wizard-in-residence at Ethereum, has presented a five-year master plan to not so much improve Ethereum as to take it out into the yard, give it a much-needed haircut, and possibly a spa treatment. Or, as he diplomatically calls it, radically simplify Layer 1 over the next half-decade. Because, let’s face it, Ethereum’s codebase is now so large it may soon require planning permission and a parking permit. 🛠️😅
In a blog post charmingly titled “Simplifying the L1” (because “Send Help, The Code Is Eating Us” apparently didn’t make the cut), Buterin called for Ethereum to emulate Bitcoin’s minimalist charm. Apparently, admiring Bitcoin’s simplicity is like loving the IKEA manual—not because it’s fun to read but because at least everything fits into a small box and doesn’t break the moment you sneeze at it.
“One of the best things about Bitcoin is how simple it is. This simplicity has lots of benefits. Let’s bring those benefits to Ethereum.”

So what does the plan entail? In short: The Great Ethereum Diet. Ethereum currently boasts 300,000 lines of code—just the thing if your favorite hobby is reading, rewriting, and cursing at code. In contrast, Bitcoin’s consensus code would barely fill a decent novella, coming in at a mere 15,000 lines. Apparently, size matters… just not how everyone thought. 😏
Of course, those extra lines aren’t for show—Ethereum’s code is packed full of fancy features and clever tricks like smart contracts and decentralized applications. Problem is, more moving parts means more places for gremlins to hide; see: 2016 and the Great ETH Vanishing Trick, when a smart contract did its best impression of a leaking wallet and “misplaced” $50 million worth of ETH. Oops.
The crux of Buterin’s proposal? Impose a maximum code line cap. Imagine: no more code bloat, fewer existential crises for developers, and hackers left staring at the protocol wondering where all the cozy vulnerabilities went. Auditing gets easier, exploits get rarer, and—if the winds blow just right—nobody accidentally reinvents quantum entanglement in the middle of the codebase.
With that, Buterin serves us a little metaphysical wisdom: “Simplicity, like decentralization, is upstream of resilience.” Which, loosely translated, means “it’s harder to break something if there’s less stuff to break.” Philosophers, eat your heart out.
On with the wizardry! Buterin’s plan doesn’t just stop at code-trimming; he also proposes replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) (beloved by some, loathed by many) with the far zippier RISC-V virtual machine. Benefits purportedly include faster zero-knowledge proofs, cheaper gas fees, and making Ethereum competitive with blockchains like Solana. Basically, your transactions might start arriving before you finish clicking. 🏎️
There’s more: protocol-wide standardization. Wave goodbye to the days when each tool seemed to require its own pet serialization format and tree structure. With a nod to SSZ and unified erasure coding, developers could soon spend less time arguing about formats and more time accidentally deploying to mainnet. Hurrah.
This entire simplicity fiesta comes at a crucial moment, as competitors nibble at Ethereum’s heels and developers mutter darkly about greener pastures and slicker blockchains. Whether Buterin’s plan transforms Ethereum into blockchain royalty or just gives it a really dramatic mid-life crisis, well, only time (and several very caffeinated programmers) will tell.
One thing’s for certain: in blockchain land, the only constant is debate. Complexity versus simplicity isn’t a bug—it might actually be the featured product. Grab your popcorn, keep your wallets close, and let’s see where the next five years take us. 🥳⏳
