YuYu Hakusho: 10 Strongest Characters, Ranked

YuYu Hakusho is a classic battle shonen anime that played a key role in making the genre popular, alongside series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, and Flame of Recca. Even now, it’s considered one of the best shonen anime ever made, with memorable characters like Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama battling demons through dangerous tournaments, challenging missions, and epic conflicts between the human, spirit, and demon realms.

In YuYu Hakusho, Yusuke and his allies aren’t the only ones with incredible powers. Many villains also have immense strength and fighting skills. This list highlights the most powerful characters from across the Human, Spirit, and Demon Worlds in YuYu Hakusho.

10. Chu Has Upper S-Class Demon Potential

Chu began as a relatively weak demon in YuYu Hakusho, but he became much stronger after training with Genkai and Natsume. By the time the Demon World Tournament started, he was a mid-level S-class demon. Though he lost badly to Natsume, he continued to improve quickly, showing he could eventually reach the upper S-class and possibly even become as powerful as Natsume or Kujou.

I’m a huge fan of Chu, and what really sets him apart is his incredible fighting style! It’s all about getting stronger the more he drinks – specifically, this awesome drink called Ogre Killer. Once he’s had enough, he unleashes his Drunken Fist: Sui Ken, and honestly, it’s terrifying to watch because he becomes completely unpredictable! It makes him such a dangerous opponent.

9. Shigure Is a Master Swordsman

Shigure, also called the Doctor of Darkness, played a key role in Hiei’s story in YuYu Hakusho. After learning about Hiei’s past, Shigure implanted the Jagan Eye into his forehead. Shigure is a highly skilled swordsman who fights with a unique weapon—the Phosphorous Ring Sword, which resembles a large, ring-shaped blade.

Shigure is a powerful warrior in Mukuro’s realm, even capable of overpowering Kurama in his normal state during the Demon World Tournament. Despite losing, he upheld his warrior’s code, preferring to die fighting rather than give up, and accepted his loss with dignity.

8. Kurama Commands Fear Through His Mind and Strength

Kurama is a formidable fighter in YuYu Hakusho, famous for his stunning but dangerous fox demon form. He’s skilled in a variety of plant-based attacks, including controlling plants, creating razor-sharp leaves, using forgetfulness-inducing pollen, and his signature Rose Whip.

Kurama is a key member of Team Urameshi, known for being both a powerful fighter and a brilliant strategist. He’s able to win battles by being as smart as he is strong. By the series’ end, Kurama’s power and demon energy have increased dramatically – highlighted by his win against Shigure – and he becomes Yomi’s most trusted advisor.

7. Shura Lacks Experience But Possesses Great Potential

It’s common for Shura in YuYu Hakusho to dismiss opponents like Yusuke Urameshi as weak. Though Shura often acts arrogant and condescending, he’s genuinely powerful, likely thanks to his demonic heritage, despite being immature and lacking experience.

Shura is a clone of Yomi, and he’s a powerful warrior like his father. During their battle, Shura fought with incredible speed and determination, pushing himself to the breaking point despite Yomi’s greater skill and strength. Although he ultimately lost, Shura demonstrated that even a newcomer to fighting can be a formidable opponent.

6. Hiei Rises to Upper S-Class Demon Status

Hiei is famous for his Jagan Eye, a powerful ability that boosts his senses, controls his demonic powers, and lets him create destructive dark flames. However, his strength isn’t just natural; he also becomes more skilled through rigorous training with Mukuro.

Despite losing to Mukuro in the Demon World Tournament—even though Mukuro wasn’t at full strength—Hiei fought incredibly well. Before he officially became one of the strongest demons in YuYu Hakusho, he was already more powerful than most characters, including Yusuke, who Hiei almost defeated early in the series.

5. Yusuke Urameshi Is Powerful But Falls Short of the Strongest Title

Even though Yusuke Urameshi is the central character in YuYu Hakusho, he doesn’t ultimately become the most powerful. Throughout the series, Yusuke gains significant strength, first by learning from Genkai and later by discovering his demon heritage, but he doesn’t finish the story as the strongest fighter.

Yusuke Urameshi is an incredibly strong fighter who gets even more powerful as a battle continues. This allows him to challenge powerful demons and constantly improve his abilities throughout the series. He’s unique because he can use both spirit and demon energy, letting him compete with the toughest enemies in YuYu Hakusho.

4. Raizen’s Friends Dominate the Demon World Tournament

Raizen has a group of incredibly powerful demon friends, all at the highest level. They regularly spar with him, and the fact that they can even compete with someone as strong as Raizen proves just how much demon energy they possess.

I’ve seen a lot of powerful demons around Raizen, but Enki is consistently ranked as the strongest. He doesn’t look like much – often just another face in the crowd watching the tournaments – but his power is shockingly close to Yomi’s, making him a real contender. And it’s not just Enki; all of Raizen’s allies are incredibly strong, regularly winning battles across the Demon World Tournament. They consistently prove they’re a force to be reckoned with.

3. Yomi Defeats Yusuke Without Going All Out

In YuYu Hakusho, the name “Yomi” actually means “underworld,” which is appropriate considering he’s one of the three strongest kings of the Demon World. He also possesses incredibly high demon energy – 1,550,000, only slightly less than Mukuro’s.

Yomi is incredibly fast in YuYu Hakusho, moving so quickly it looks like teleportation. Even with less demon energy, he managed to keep up with Yusuke Urameshi during a grueling 60-hour fight! It’s amazing to think how much further Yomi could have fought if he hadn’t been deliberately limiting his power.

2. Mukuro Is the Strongest Female Character in YuYu Hakusho

Mukuro, one of the Three Kings from YuYu Hakusho, is the series’ most powerful female character. What makes her different is that her strength fluctuates with her emotions – specifically, the more she hates, the stronger she becomes. This means her power has no fixed limit, making her a dangerous and unpredictable fighter.

Throughout the series, Mukuro hasn’t revealed the full scope of her power. Even during the Demon World Tournament, she only fought with half her strength when facing Hiei, who was a very powerful, upper-class demon at the time.

1. Prime Raizen Stands Above All Others

Raizen, being a full-blooded Mazoku, is stronger than any high-ranking S-class demon in YuYu Hakusho. At his most powerful, he’s considered the strongest being in the Demon World – even the combined forces of Yomi and Mukuro couldn’t defeat him. He rightfully earned the title of Battle God through countless victories that happened outside of what viewers actually see.

Raizen could have lived for centuries and continued to rule the Demon World if he hadn’t chosen to weaken himself. Even at his weakest, his power was incredibly high – measured at 1,322,000 – hinting at a truly unimaginable strength in his prime.
