There’s talk that Nintendo might remake Ocarina of Time for the upcoming Switch 2, and The Legend of Zelda fans are debating how the game could be updated, particularly its world design. This year is the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, but Nintendo hasn’t announced any special celebrations yet. While it’s a major milestone for one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, the company is still focused on anniversaries for Super Mario Bros. and Pokemon. Right now, it seems like Zelda‘s anniversary is taking a backseat.
Things are expected to change later this year, especially regarding rumors of a remake of Ocarina of Time. These rumors have been circulating for months, originally surfacing alongside news of a new Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo recently confirmed the Star Fox game, which has led many fans to believe an Ocarina of Time remake announcement is just a matter of time. Ocarina of Time is a highly acclaimed classic, and a remake built for the Nintendo Switch 2 would be a fantastic way to mark the franchise’s 40th anniversary.
What Zelda Fans Want From the Ocarina of Time Remake
With talk of a remake of Ocarina of Time growing, fans are divided on what they hope it will be like. One fan on Reddit proposed that the developers should make the game’s areas larger and more detailed, using modern technology. Others would prefer a remake that stays true to the original, building upon the enhancements already made in the 2011 3DS version, Ocarina of Time 3D. While the 3DS version is highly praised, many fans are hoping for a more substantial remake.

If Nintendo is indeed remaking Ocarina of Time, the developers have opportunities to improve the game without losing what fans love about it. While not every area needs to be larger, Hyrule Field might feel a little bare to players used to the expansive world of Breath of the Wild. The remake doesn’t need to copy features like weapon durability from newer games, but updating the open-world design could be a good approach. Expanding certain parts of the game while keeping the original dungeons largely the same would likely make it feel both new and true to the original.
It will be fascinating to see what Nintendo does with its next game. The new Star Fox for the Switch 2 is a remake of the classic N64 game, updated with better graphics and added story elements. While it’s unclear if Nintendo will release two N64 remakes in one year, the future of Ocarina of Time is still a mystery. The developers face a challenge: they need to create a remake that honors the original game, which many people already adore, but also feels fresh and justifies its existence.

The holidays are still a big question mark. If those rumors about a remake of Ocarina of Time are true, Nintendo will need to let us know soon, especially with the Switch 2 price going up in September.
