With many James Bond stories already told, “007 First Light” offers a fresh take on the famous spy. This version isn’t the seasoned agent we’re used to; it shows Bond as a new recruit working to earn his 00 status. Having captivated audiences for 73 years, Ian Fleming’s Bond has seen numerous interpretations, and this is the latest.
James Bond has appeared in many novels, movies, TV shows, and video games, creating a huge amount of content for fans. While most people know Bond through the films and books, he’s also been featured in numerous video game adaptations. Though not all Bond games have been great, GoldenEye is still considered the best by many longtime fans and gamers. Now almost 30 years old, no other Bond game has quite reached the same level of acclaim. Facing the legacy of GoldenEye is a challenge, and Theuns Smit, Licensing Producer for 007 First Light, recently spoke with TopMob about how the developer, IO Interactive, aimed to make their new game stand out from such a beloved classic.
007 First Light Uses Its Unique Identity to Make a Game That’s Very Different From GoldenEye
Whether GoldenEye is the best James Bond game is a matter of opinion. But it’s undoubtedly the most important. Released on the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye helped popularize first-person shooter games on consoles. While some console FPS games existed before it, GoldenEye really brought the genre to a wider audience. Its impact on the industry is still felt today, and many consider it one of the greatest FPS games ever made.

The game GoldenEye was a landmark title, especially for its enjoyable local multiplayer. It significantly advanced the first-person shooter genre, and subsequent James Bond games have struggled to live up to its standard. However, 007 First Light appears to have the potential to be another truly great Bond game. IO Interactive faces the challenge of reimagining James Bond while staying true to the franchise’s history. As a Bond game, it’s inevitable that 007 First Light would be compared to GoldenEye, and potentially draw inspiration from it. When asked about GoldenEye‘s influence, developer Theuns Smit stated:
As a long-time fan, I’ve always felt the spirit of the original films, books, and games is really woven into this new experience. Everyone definitely has a soft spot for GoldenEye, and it’s amazing, but we didn’t want to just remake something that already exists. Those classics are perfect as they are! We wanted to create our own story, our own thrilling action, and a completely fresh way to play.
IO Interactive deliberately steered clear of taking inspiration from GoldenEye when developing their new game, and the features revealed so far for 007 First Light reflect that. The game offers a more cinematic, third-person experience with much greater gameplay flexibility. True to IO Interactive’s style, 007 First Light gives players a remarkable amount of freedom in how they approach and complete missions.
007 First Light Could Be the Definitive James Bond Game, But It’s Not Exclusive to Just Longtime Fans
While the new spin on James Bond in the game is already captivating, it’s just one of the many things that make 007 First Light so compelling. IO Interactive wants to deliver everything fans love about a James Bond story. The game’s narrative is firmly based on the history of the franchise, which should especially appeal to longtime fans eager to truly feel like they’re playing as 007. According to Smit, the goal is to create a Bond experience that’s completely immersive:
We’re striving to create a truly comprehensive James Bond experience – perhaps the most immersive Bond game yet. We want players to have everything they’d expect: iconic gadgets, thrilling gunfights, fast-paced vehicle sections, stunning locations, memorable characters, and all the classic Bond elements like MI6 and Q Lab. If you’re a fan, we think you’ll absolutely love it.
While dedicated James Bond fans will enjoy 007 First Light, the developers at IO Interactive also aimed to create a game that’s fun for those new to the series. Everything – from the character of James Bond to the exciting action and the game’s villain – is designed to appeal to both longtime fans and players simply looking for a new, enjoyable gaming experience. Smit explained further that:
This game isn’t just for James Bond fans. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, it’s a thrilling, story-driven action adventure. For many, it could be their first experience with Bond, which is fantastic. The game has the potential to appeal to fans old and new, spanning generations – something Bond has always done well, and it’s truly special to be able to deliver that experience.
As a huge Bond fan, it’s wild to think that for some people, 007 First Light might be their very first experience with James Bond! It’s more than just another Bond game, though. It feels like a fresh start for the character, a chance to really define what a spy game can be, especially for those new to the world of 007.
007 First Light’s Rookie Bond Could Have a Big Impact
It’s doubtful 007 First Light will have the same impact as GoldenEye, but it could still be a significant moment for the James Bond franchise. While there’s been a lot of discussion about the next Bond actor, this game feels like it could be a major success. James Bond has always been popular in both movies and games, but now gaming is telling stories just as well. The great thing about games is they let you experience being these iconic characters. After decades as a movie series, James Bond might be finding a new strength as a game franchise.
IO Interactive hasn’t announced any plans for future games in the 007 First Light series, and it’s still too soon to know if that’s even possible. However, they haven’t ruled it out completely. With a cast that feels like it’s from a big-budget movie, it will be interesting to see if the game delivers a truly immersive James Bond experience. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer, as 007 First Light is launching later this month.
