10 Most Confusing Kingdom Hearts III Moments

It feels like ages since Kingdom Hearts 3 came out. While it finished the story arc of Xehanort, the game introduced a lot of unanswered questions that have become even more puzzling since then.

It’s been more than seven years since the last Kingdom Hearts game, and fans have been eagerly awaiting news from director Tetsuya Nomura about the next installment. All that waiting has led to a lot of theories and speculation!

After waiting over a decade for Kingdom Hearts 3 following Kingdom Hearts 2, fans had several spin-off games to play in the meantime. However, since the release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remakes, new Kingdom Hearts games have been scarce, likely because the director, Nomura, has been focused on that project.

Most fans agree that Kingdom Hearts 3 had a confusing and somewhat disorganized story, and didn’t quite deliver a satisfying conclusion to the Xehanort saga. It often felt less like an ending and more like a fresh start, introducing new storylines that seem intended for future games – hopefully ones we’ll see released within the next few years.

So, after thinking about everything in Kingdom Hearts 3, here are 10 things I’m really hoping they explain in the next game. I’m dying to know what happens with these plot points!

10. Why We Even Visited Frozen’s World To Begin With

This World Could Have Been An Email

In past Kingdom Hearts games, visiting Disney worlds felt meaningful – we’d usually tackle enemies connected to the main bad guys or find important story clues. But Kingdom Hearts 3 changed that. It often felt like we were just inserted into scenes from Disney movies as a silent observer, making the experience less engaging and more like watching a replay.

The world based on Frozen is a particularly weak point in the game, as it doesn’t really contribute to the overall story. It’s made worse by the fact that the game pauses for a full replay of Elsa’s song ‘Let it Go,’ with Sora, Donald, and Goofy simply watching.

The final result is a disappointing experience, as it seems Disney heavily restricted the developers, preventing them from adding their own creative ideas or letting players meaningfully impact the story.

9. What’s Up With Young Xehanort?

As if Time Travel Could Get Any More Convoluted

Kingdom Hearts 3 is a very complex game, and it throws a lot of new ideas at players right away. As if that wasn’t enough, the game’s writer and director, Tetsuya Nomura, decided to add time travel to the mix!

The game introduces time travel through the character Young Xehanort, a member of the new Organization XIII. Considering how many different versions of Xehanort players already battle in this game, adding one from his past feels unnecessary.

In Dream Drop Distance, we discover that Ansem (the villain from the first Kingdom Hearts and Xehanort’s Heartless) went back in time to teach Young Xehanort how to time travel. He did this by separating his heart from his body and existing purely as a heart. Following Ansem’s instructions, Young Xehanort journeyed through time, collecting different incarnations of himself to create the true Organization XIII.

Many fans expected a clearer explanation of the ‘Power of Waking’ in Kingdom Hearts 3, but it remains confusing, especially regarding its limitations. Sora uses this power to travel through time and restore lost hearts, and then seems to be penalized for doing so. This raises questions – why is Sora punished when Xehanort uses similar abilities without consequence? Is the power Sora uses fundamentally different from what Xehanort wields?

8. Where is Sora Now?

Is Sora Lost in Shibuya?

The end of Kingdom Hearts 3 leaves players with a big question mark. Sora is suddenly moved to a different world, apparently as a consequence for using the Power of Waking and disrupting the natural order.

Similar to the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2, where Sora first appears in the ‘Sanctuary’ scene, the final scene shows Sora with Kairi on the paopu tree before disappearing, leaving Kairi by herself.

Sora eventually wakes up in a strange city resembling Shibuya, a place briefly seen during the Toy Story section of the game. There, he faces a difficult battle against Yozura in an area called Quadratum, as part of the Re Mind DLC. After defeating a character strongly resembling Noctis, Sora disappears, claiming his abilities aren’t fully developed. He then finds himself awake in the back of a car, a scene reminiscent of trailers for Final Fantasy 13 Versus, and repeats lines questioning what is real.

Later in the game, Riku shows up in the same city, hinting at a future meeting with Sora in the next installment. It’s currently a mystery how Riku arrived there, or even what the city actually is. We’re left wondering why Sora ended up in this particular world, and why it’s also featured as a video game within the Toy Story universe. While these questions remain unanswered for now, hopefully Kingdom Hearts 4 will provide some explanations.

7. Who is the Master of Masters?

Should Have Played That Mobile Spin-Off Game

Once players collect all 90 Mickey Mouse emblems throughout the game, they’ll unlock a special ending. This ending features a unique battle between Sora and Yozura, set in a dreamlike version of Shibuya. There’s also a quick shot of the Master of Masters, who appears to be watching everything unfold.

Who is this mysterious figure, appearing again with the Organization’s cloak? It’s a secret! You’d need to have played the mobile game Kingdom Hearts Union X to understand his background and the events of the Keyblade War.

We discover he forged the very first Keyblade and intentionally started the original Keyblade War, the echoes of which form the game’s final area. He also possesses the ability to foresee the future, a power similar to, but less absolute than, time travel.

This character is surprisingly quirky and doesn’t feel as intimidating as you’d expect, given his role. The creator, Nomura, plans for him to be the main villain in the next phase of the Kingdom Hearts story, so we can anticipate learning more about his motivations and powers later on.

6. Who Was Xigbar the Entire Time?

More Important Than We Realize

Xigbar is a popular character from Organization XIII, and it’s easy to see why. He has a cool look, a fun personality, and many fans consider his boss fight in Kingdom Hearts 2 to be one of the best in the series.

When you defeat him at the end of Kingdom Hearts 3, the character pretends to fall to his death. However, the epilogue reveals his true identity: he’s actually Luxu, an ancient Keyblade Master. He uses the Gazing Eye, hidden under his eyepatch, to transfer his consciousness into different bodies.

A side game reveals that Luxu was a student of the Master of Masters and one of the few who lived through the Keyblade War. Interestingly, he actually played a key role in starting that war, which makes his story even more compelling.

If you don’t closely follow the Kingdom Hearts story, the recent reveal was likely very confusing. Even fans who know the main plot points are left wondering how everyone missed that this character wasn’t a Nobody, but a Keyblade Master all along. Add in the complicated time travel involving Young Xehanort and his attempts to build a new Organization XIII, and it’s a real challenge to understand how his plan worked.

5. Why Could The Demon Tide Kill Everyone?

The Most Successful Villain In Any Kingdom Hearts Game

The Demon Tide is a boss that appears multiple times in Kingdom Hearts 3. It’s surprisingly powerful – at one point, it manages to defeat all the game’s characters. This is remarkable considering its appearance is just a mass of shadows, especially since the player has defeated countless similar, weaker enemies throughout the game.

Sora could only travel through time and ultimately defeat the Heartless by using the incredibly powerful ability known as the Power of Waking, which allowed him to overcome the normal rules of reality and reunite with his friends.

This villain is easily the most formidable in the series. It consistently defeats the heroes and ultimately takes 300 skilled Keyblade masters to finally defeat it. However, the story doesn’t really explain how such a powerful Heartless came to be, or why it’s so much stronger than any other enemy of its kind. Despite its importance to the plot, its origins remain largely a mystery.

It’s currently unknown if future games will reveal more about the Demon Tide, or if we’ll encounter even more of these creatures.

4. What’s Up With Luxord’s Card?

Does This Gift Card Have an Expiration Date?

I really like Luxord, largely because his style reminds me of a nu-metal artist from the mid-2000s. Beyond his look, he’s also a strong and capable enemy in Kingdom Hearts 3, with some notable accomplishments.

So, at the very end of my battle with Luxord in the Keyblade Graveyard, he actually gave me a card after I beat him. He told me to hold onto it, calling it the ‘Wild Card,’ and said I’d need it to change things later on – basically, to fight against what’s supposed to happen. Thing is, I never actually used the card in the rest of the game! That’s got a lot of us wondering if it’s going to be the key to getting Sora out of Quadratum after he vanished there at the end. It feels like it has to be important, right?

It’s worth noting that Luxord played a part in the events of Chain of Memories and can trap anything within his cards. This means his power could be almost anything, and fans are eager to see it demonstrated in the future.

3. What is Going on with Maleficent and Pete?

“What’s in the Box???”

Maleficent and Pete are classic Disney villains, so it’s a little underwhelming to see them in Kingdom Hearts 3. After being major threats throughout the series, they’re reduced to minor characters simply searching for an object, and they don’t seem to care at all about the hero’s journey.

These characters are basically the villains of Kingdom Hearts 3, similar to Team Rocket – they show up to be annoying and remind you about a strange box that’s important to the story. Considering this is the end of the series and they were key players at the beginning, it’s a letdown that they don’t actually do anything in the game, and their scenes felt unnecessary.

Although Maleficent might return as a key villain in the next game, I wouldn’t mind if Nomura chose not to use her, to avoid exaggerating her character into something unrecognizable.

2. Who Are the Four Remaining Organization XIII Members?

They Can’t Be Nobody

Kingdom Hearts 3 brought back popular villains Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia, and Larxene from Organization XIII, and they once again served as enemies in the game.

We haven’t seen what these characters originally looked like as humans, unlike the rest of the group, and this remains an unsolved mystery in the story.

Kingdom Hearts Union X shows us the human sides of Marluxia and Larxene, revealed to be Lauriam and Elrena. This mobile game – which is surprisingly important to the overall story, but often overlooked – explains that they were both originally Keyblade wielders selected by the Master of Masters to lead a faction, and continued in that role even after the Keyblade War.

In this game, Unions function much like guilds, created to protect various worlds from the Heartless. While it’s still a mystery how Lauriam and Elrena became Heartless and created Nobodies, it does shed light on their immense power. However, until we learn more about their origins in a future Kingdom Hearts game, it’s hard to say if this backstory will remain consistent.

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about the backstories of Luxord and Demyx. Some fans think Demyx might actually be the Master of Masters hiding in plain sight, because they both have cheerful personalities. Now that we know Xigbar is Luxu, it’s possible Luxord is also a key figure – he was able to give Sora a very powerful card, and that card might hold clues about who he really is.

1. Who are the Foretellers and What Do They Want?

Yet Another Mysterious Group with Hidden Motives

As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, I was so excited to finally see the Foretellers show up in Kingdom Hearts 3! They’re this mysterious group of Keyblade Masters who all wear fox masks. There are five of them – Aced, Ava, Gula, Invi, and Ira – but it was a little weird because Ava wasn’t actually in the game, which left a lot of us wondering what happened to her.

As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by this group and their connection to the Master of Masters. It’s crazy to think that after he vanished, they basically devoted themselves to stopping another Keyblade War! And then, after Xehanort was finally defeated, things got really wild. Luxu gathered all the Foretellers at the Keyblade Graveyard and dropped this massive bombshell – he was Xigbar all along! Plus, he had this weird, powerful thing called the Black Box with him, and nobody knew what it did!

Tetsuya Nomura surprisingly suggested that certain characters likely won’t appear in Kingdom Hearts 4. This is confusing, considering the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3 heavily implied they would play a significant role in the sequel.

It’s still unclear if these characters will guide Sora later on, or if we’ll end up fighting them as enemies.
