10 Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Features that Keep the Laughs Coming

For twelve years, Nintendo didn’t say anything about a new Tomodachi game, leaving fans waiting. Now, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is finally available! It lets you create a world for your Miis, where their lives unfold in unpredictable and hilariously chaotic ways – right on your TV.

I’ve been playing the Tomodachi Life series ever since the original 3DS game came out, and I’m really enjoying this new Switch version. It captures everything I loved about the first game while adding tons of new content and features that I always wished for. Even after playing for nearly 200 hours, it’s still a lot of fun!

10. Cutscenes with Multiple Endings

What Will Happen This Time?

Cutscenes in the 3DS game Tomodachi Life usually followed a predictable path, with the biggest changes being whether Miis became friends quickly or resolved conflicts. However, the new update, Living the Dream, introduces much more variety, with several cutscenes now having multiple possible outcomes.

In Tomodachi Life, if two Miis confess their love, they might end up building a huge tower together! There are also little mishaps, like burning food when they try to cook as a couple. Plus, the game has multiple ways to reach the final goal, which is a welcome change from the original’s repetitive gameplay. I’m really enjoying seeing these unexpected events unfold and how they add more variety to the experience.

9. Shop and Market Restocks

Godspeed On Collecting Those Interiors

I keep finding myself turning on my Switch 2 and immediately checking my shops in Living the Dream. Both Where & Wear and Fresh Kingdom food mart get new items every day, so there’s always something to look at, depending on how lucky you are and how much you’ve already collected.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream now updates its furniture shop weekly on Mondays, instead of daily. There are 272 different furniture sets to collect, and some are only available during certain seasons through the Wishing Fountain. If you want to see everything the game has to offer, you’ll need to check the shop regularly. Personally, I don’t mind doing that – I always finish my day by getting a Mystery Bag from the Night Market.

8. Mixing-and-Matching Interior Parts

Make Things Feel More Like Home

With the ability to design custom interiors at the Palette House, you’ll also be able to change the wallpaper and flooring in T&C Reno’s sets. This lets you mix and match looks easily – you can keep the furniture from one set and update it with the wallpaper and flooring from another, all without needing to build anything new.

I really like this feature because it makes each of your Mii characters feel unique. Even if everyone has the same furniture, you can easily change the colors, wallpaper, and flooring to give each home a different feel. You’re free to combine any styles you want – like pairing the Sparkling Stars furniture with a Sugar Rush floor and Stormy Set wallpaper. You can even create a quirky scene, like your Mii enjoying biscuits on a damp floor!

7. Random Cutscenes While Wandering

What’s Up with Hugh?

I love checking in on my Miis in Tomodachi Life! It’s so cute when you visit them and a little sound plays, like they’re saying ‘hey!’ Then, you get these fun little scenes that play out – they’re different from the conversations you make happen between Miis. It’s neat because sometimes the scenes are even about stuff you’ve made or bought for them, like specific furniture or items on their island!

These short scenes pop up whenever you focus on a Mii character, which adds a delightful element of surprise. You might be simply observing people when one suddenly triggers, or you can initiate a quick chat through the Mii menu. It’s a much more engaging experience than just managing apartments like in the previous 3DS game.

6. Little Quirks

Get a Little Quirky With It

As your Mii character gains levels, you can give them a unique personality trait called a Little Quirk. These quirks subtly change how your Mii acts in different situations. Some quirks are noticeable – like affecting how they walk or the expressions they use – while others are surprisingly funny when they pop up, making you realize you’d given your Mii that trait!

Little Quirks really enhance even the simplest moments in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Things feel normal one second, then a Mii will float by while perfectly still, looking like a cutout. Even feeding time is unpredictable – some Miis can swallow a whole crab in one bite! One particular random quirk completely changed my experience, and it even included a little cutscene. Whether you’ll enjoy it as much as I did is another story, though – I thought it was hilarious, but some might find it a bit disgusting.

5. Detailed Mii Customization and Face Paint

Make Anything You Want If You’re Clever

Over the years, it’s become clear that the most impressive Mii creations come from pushing the limits of what’s allowed. To be honest, I’ve always loved Sonic the Hedgehog and anime. Even when I tried my best to be creative with Miis, I still had to use my imagination to really see the characters I wanted in my games.

The improvements to Mii creation in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, especially the face paint options, are truly remarkable. I recently replayed the 3DS version while waiting for the Switch release, and the difference in Mii quality is incredible. While the face paint isn’t perfect and sometimes creates odd bald spots, I’d much rather have a Mii that resembles a real person, even with minor flaws, than one that doesn’t.

4. Area-Based Mini-Games

Anything But Plates in Shadow Quiz, Please

A key part of enjoying Tomodachi Life has always been playing mini-games with your Mii characters. Winning games like Pixel Quiz and watching your Miis’ dreams are how you earn treasures. As you’d expect from a sequel, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream introduces new mini-games. These new games sometimes change depending on where your Mii is, and include options like Poke the Ferris Wheel, Latte Art Quiz, and Bowling.

As someone who’s been playing for a long time, these minigames immediately caught my eye. I haven’t managed to win at the Ferris Wheel game yet, but I’m usually pretty good at the cup shuffling ones, and I’m really hoping to get a strike in the bowling alley someday. Honestly, I much prefer these to the Shadow Quiz game where you have to guess the plate shapes – they’re way more fun! The only frustrating thing is they seem super rare; my Mii characters keep asking for them, but I can never find them when I’m looking!

3. Palette House

Just Make Something Up

As I said earlier, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream offers tons of furniture, hundreds of collectibles, and even more food items. With thousands of clothing options thanks to the many different colors, you can really customize everything. And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, the game lets you create it yourself, or just build something completely silly!

At the Palette House, you can create all sorts of things – clothes, decorations, landscaping features, and even building-like objects to place around your island. Even after collecting everything in the game, you can keep creating to further customize your Miis’ world. Or, you might get carried away with a huge project, like trying to recreate an entire arcade, and leave it unfinished for a long time… maybe that’s just something I do!

2. Level-Up Goods

Sometimes You Just Need New Toys

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream doesn’t have a lot of items to collect this time around – only 11 are available through the Wishing Fountain. However, the items you can unlock are surprisingly fun and really bring your island to life in unexpected ways.

I’ve tried out all the fun items in the game, and it’s hilarious watching my Mii characters use them. I’ve seen dates ruined by a Mii playing guitar, and even a ballet dancer trying to share a dance with a breakdancer. One time, a breakdancing couple blocked a bridge I built and were serenaded by three other Miis playing guitar – it was a whole scene! Other Miis joined in, using their own items to add to the chaos.

Occasionally, a random Mii character will unexpectedly grab a frying pan or stick and start causing trouble. It’s amazing to see the things they’ll do, whether they’re using the item or not!

1. Island Lingo

Watch Your Profanity, Or Not

Before the game came out, many players were disappointed to learn it wouldn’t have a way to share creations. However, once the demo was released, it became clear why. The game completely lacked content moderation, and with players quickly discovering that creating and sharing in-game slang was a core part of the experience, this became a major issue.

Tomodachi Life has always let players express themselves through their Miis, with features like Quirky Questions and the Concert Hall. The new game seems to be taking that a step further with ‘island lingo,’ which subtly alters conversations. This creates unexpected and often funny moments as you check in on your Miis, and with a little creativity, it ensures they always have something new to say – whether that’s a good thing or not!
