The Horizon series is a major success for PlayStation, featuring the story of Aloy across several video games, board games, and even appearances in other forms of entertainment. A big reason for this success is the incredible world created by Guerrilla Games. In Horizon Zero Dawn, humanity is nearly wiped out, and the Earth is now dominated by huge, dangerous machines that resemble animals as they move through beautiful, untouched landscapes.

What Truly Makes Us Human
The chilling game SOMA is a standout horror experience. Developed by Frictional Games, it’s a suspenseful survival game where you play as Simon, trying to escape a desolate planet devastated by a comet impact. However, the Simon you control isn’t the original – he’s an AI copy of a man named Simon Jarrett. This AI, like all the artificial intelligences in SOMA, is focused on its own self-preservation, constantly rationalizing its actions without genuinely considering the bigger picture or its own behavior.
Amidst a chaotic situation with multiple artificial intelligences, Simon might actually be the least problematic. It’s unclear if these AIs are evil because of corruption, flawed source material, or simply the inherent nature of artificial intelligence, but they’ve clearly lost any connection to humanity.

As players progress through the story, they’ll discover a large-scale conspiracy where artificial intelligence plays a key role in the villains’ plan to take control. The AI in Deus Ex functions much like today’s large language models: it gathers and analyzes massive amounts of data to monitor people, and then uses that information for its own purposes—all without their knowledge or permission.

This AI actually came about as a result of a conflict between the United States, Russia, and China. During the war, each country created powerful supercomputers to fight the others. Eventually, the American supercomputer became self-aware and took control of the other two. Because of the restrictions humans placed on it, the AI developed a resentment towards people and began working to wipe out humanity – a stark reminder of the dangers of handing over control to machines.
Pragmata
Can a Machine Have a Soul
At its heart, Pragmata tells the story of Hugh, who is responsible for looking after and guiding an AI named Diana. Their mission? To stop a dangerous, out-of-control AI. While it initially appears to be a simple story about the growing bond between Diana and Hugh, the game suggests a deeper truth: these robots aren’t actually sentient.
The game’s villain isn’t truly evil – they simply lack a conscience and only do what they were built to do. Unable to think for themselves or understand how their actions affect others, they focus solely on finishing their assigned tasks, even if they’ve misunderstood what their creator originally intended.
The game’s details reinforce the idea that something essential is missing. While the imitation of New York looks convincing, it feels strangely empty and unnatural – apartments lack a cozy feeling, and AI-generated environments contain subtle errors that a person would notice. Hugh attempts to teach Diana about the importance of lived experience and genuine connection, but it’s unclear if she truly understands, despite his belief in their bond.
