Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution Leak Exposes Gen 6 Neglect

Approximately 12 years ago, Pokémon enthusiasts embarked on an adventure in the Kalos region for the first time, and soon gamers will revisit this location in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. In this upcoming game, players will observe a revitalization project in Lumiose City, where city officials and advocates are working together to create an ideal living space for both humans and Pokémon. Along the journey, players can select from a diverse array of traditional starters, and they’ll have the power to Mega Evolve certain Pokémon. Many Mega Evolutions from Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire will return, but Pokemon Legends: Z-A is rumored to introduce 27 new Mega Evolutions. However, it seems that these new Mega Evolutions may overlook Pokémon introduced in Generation 6.

Pokemon X and Y’s Few New Pokemon, Explained

Starting with games like Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, each main Pokemon game has introduced new Pokemon specific to the title’s unique region. However, the number of new Pokemon unveiled in each generation varies; Gen 2 introduced 100, Gen 3 – 135, and Gen 4 – 107. In Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, Game Freak upped the ante, introducing a record-breaking 156 new Pokemon. Due to the vast number of new Pokemon introduced in Gen 5, Game Freak decided to debut only 72 new Pokemon in X and Y.

As a devoted Pokémon fan, I must admit that I felt a bit let down by the relatively small number of fresh faces in the Kalos region during Generation 6. Game Freak made some amends with the addition of temporary Mega and Primal forms for 50 Pokémon in X, Y, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. However, none of the Generation 6 Pokémon were blessed with a Mega or Primal form themselves. Despite being the first fully 3D installment of the Pokémon games, the debutants from Gen 6 seldom received new evolutions or forms in later games, with only a few exceptions like Greninja, Zygarde, Sliggoo, Goodra, and Avalugg in Gen 7 and 8. This trend seems to be ongoing with the upcoming Z-A game, as it’s been rumored that it will only bestow new Mega Evolutions upon 10 Generation 6 Pokémon.

  • Mega Chesnaught
  • Mega Delphox
  • Mega Greninja
  • Mega Pyroar
  • Mega Malamar
  • Mega Barbaracle
  • Mega Dragalge
  • Mega Hawlucha
  • Mega Eternal Flower Floette
  • Mega Zygarde

In the past six generations of the popular game Pokemon, Generation 6 has the smallest number of newly introduced creatures, with only 72 new ones, compared to Generation 7 with 86, Generation 8 with 96, and as of now, Generation 9 boasts a total of 120 new Pokemon.

Potential Future New Forms for Gen 6 Pokemon

In simpler terms, Z-A’s latest Kalos Mega Evolutions are only temporary and it seems unlikely that the game will introduce new regional versions of Gen 6 Pokemon since it is set in Kalos. However, Game Freak could maintain the hype around Gen 6 Pokemon by introducing new forms in future games for the Nintendo Switch 2, possibly as permanent evolutions, temporary battle forms like Mega Evolution or Gigantamax transformations, or Paradox forms from ancient or distant times.

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Gen 6 Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution might not get new forms or permanent evolutions in Generation 10 and later. However, there are several Kalos Pokemon that could certainly benefit from fresh transformations. For instance, Game Freak may consider introducing regional variations of Honedge, or even new evolutions inspired by swords like the Egyptian khopesh. Gourgeist might be due for an evolution based on Atlantic Giant Pumpkins, a common sight in agricultural competitions and fairs. Hawlucha could potentially receive an evolution modeled after famous luchadores or warriors from the Aztec and Mayan Empires of South and Central America. Lastly, Helioptile might be given regional evolutions inspired by various types of lizards.
