Having chatted with Nai’o within Elderwood and on a mission to find the missing boy in the mysterious town of Palia, I came back empty-handed, as he might be hiding somewhere too deep within the woods for me to reach at this moment. Later on, Nai’o rewards me with an enigmatic artifact that could prove beneficial in future adventures, and it is then that The Nature of Shadows quest begins.

In this third Elderwood tale, your task is to aid Subira in her investigation of a mysterious energy disturbance in a newly discovered area. To do so, you’ll be collecting local plants and minerals. For those intrigued, this guide assists you in completing the quest known as “The Shadows’ Essence” within the game called Palia.

Palia’s The Nature of Shadows Quest Walkthrough

Here are the steps you’ll need to check off:

Talk to Subira and Give Her the Minerals

First, head over to talk to Subira in Elderwood. She’ll be at the same location where your last mission ended. Upon interacting with her, she’ll share that after the enigmatic stranger set off the protocol, a peculiar purple energy has been expanding across Elderwood. This energy seems to be causing a sense of melancholy in anyone it touches.

As a curious fan, I’m asked by Subira to gather some essential mineral samples scattered throughout Elderwood. These samples will be sent to the Alchemy Lab for analysis, focusing initially on understanding its impact on our beloved land. Here are the minerals I should collect during my mining:

  • 20 Stone
  • 10 Whitestone
  • 10 Palium Ore

In the vast expanse of Elderwood, you might stumble upon these minerals here and there. A productive area to gather them is situated between Central Stables and Mauvais Way. Crack open the white-hued stones for Stone and Whitestone, and seek out blue gemstone-like rocks to mine Palium. However, remember to equip yourself with at least a Fine Pickaxe before attempting to mine Palium in Palia.

Collect Ingredients for Tamala’s Potion

After receiving the minerals, Subira remarks that they appear satisfactory. However, she also confides that certain plants seemed to keep their distance from her as if they were contaminated when she tried to collect samples herself. Now, she is asking for your help in finding a way to approach these elusive plants.

In a more conversational tone:

Tamala joins our discussion and mentions she’s been conducting some peculiar energy experiments and is eager to lend a hand. After exchanging a few words with Subira near the eastern stables exit, make your way back to Elderwood Stables to inform Tamala that you’re both prepared for her assistance. Here’s a list of items you need to gather for Tamala so she can concoct the potion:

  • 1 Toadstool Floatfish
  • 3 Elderwood Orchid
  • 1 Cave Piksii
  • 10 Infected Essence

Toadstool Floatfish can be caught without bait in the waters of De Mer Dock. Similarly, you can find Elderwood Orchids by picking the lilac-pink flowers scattered around Deep Woods. On the contrary, Cave Piksii inhabit caves within Elderwood; use a Smoke Bomb to capture one. Lastly, Infected Essence is obtained by gathering the floating purple orbs in various locations across Elderwood, such as near Central Stables and Red Blossom Cave in Palia.

Gather Infected Plants and Infected Essence

1. Potion ingredients for Tamala to brew the potion
2. Ability to touch and collect infected plants as samples
3. Extra Infected Essences for personal use

  • 5 Infected Plants
  • 50 Infected Essence

In the game called Palia, to gather Infected Plants, first, consume the Elderwood Potion. Then, explore trees, flowers, bushes, or plants that appear to have a dark purplish glow. These can be found in abundance near Red Blossom Cave. Be aware that you should only drink the potion when you spot an infected plant because it lasts for just 10 minutes. Once the time elapses, you won’t be able to collect more. If your timer runs out before you finish collecting, go to Tamala’s Potion Shop at Central Stables and buy another potion for 15 Infected Essence. Good luck!

In addition to gathering those pretty purple floating orbs, you’ll also receive Infected Essence automatically when you pick infected plants. Once you’ve gathered all the items, simply deliver them to Subira to wrap up “The Nature of Shadows” quest in Palia.
