Here it is: And so, that’s all folks! The second season of “The Last of Us” has come to an end, and oh, what a thrilling ride it was for fans of the Naughty Dog adaptation! As we navigated through the peaks and valleys, season 2 of HBO’s series flipped Joel and Ellie’s world on its head as they found themselves entangled in internal conflicts, while also facing an even more uncertain world than the one they left at the end of season 1. In addition to some unexpected character deaths in the final episode, a subtle “Game of Thrones” reference is tucked away for keen-eyed viewers.
In the penultimate yet emotionally soothing episode of The Last of Us Season 2, we saw Joel resurface in flashbacks. The finale of this season delved even deeper into Ellie’s quest for vengeance against the WLF in Seattle. Fans had already seen what Ellie was capable of when they witnessed her extracting information brutally from Nora (Tati Gabrielle), but now, her revenge spiraled out of control as she accidentally killed a heavily pregnant Mel and a startled Owen while overreacting. As Tommy and Jesse intervened to save Dina and Ellie, the story took a heartbreaking turn with Jesse becoming another casualty of Abby’s wrath. Before the episode ended on a suspenseful note, hinting at Season 3, we see Abby reading a book in the stadium, but this isn’t an ordinary book – it shares connections to another renowned HBO series.
Abby’s Book in The Last of Us Season 2 Finale Has a Game of Thrones Connection

Near the end of the final episode of The Last of Us season 2, viewers find Abby dozing off on a couch with a book titled “Thieves of the City” by an author named Ben Davidoff in her lap. However, this book is fictional, so fans can’t physically buy it to understand more about Abby’s reading material. Interestingly, the creators of HBO’s The Last of Us have playfully jabbed at David Benioff, a key figure in Game of Thrones as he served alongside D.B. Weiss, the co-showrunners of Game of Thrones, by swapping his first and last names.
More recently, Craig Mazin, the showrunner for The Last of Us Season 2, was questioned if any influence came from Game of Thrones’ battle scenes during the creation of their impressive Jackson confrontation with the infected. Mazin admitted to being an avid Game of Thrones fan and appreciating how HBO executed “Hardhome”, the eighth episode of the fifth season. This casual nod to another epic HBO series, which was initially thought to be a mere book reference, makes sense considering Mazin has already expressed his admiration for the show.
It’s great news that season 3 of The Last of Us has been confirmed, even before the second season debuted. The upcoming season is expected to delve into Abby’s point of view, as hinted in the finale of season 2 when she was seen at the stadium, which functions as a base for the WLF. However, HBO hasn’t announced a release date for The Last of Us Season 3 just yet. If the series maintains its previous schedule, production might start in 2026, with a possible premiere around early 2027.
