The following contains spoilers for my Hero Academia.
In the animated series “My Hero Academia”, Izuku Midoriya stands out as a uniquely fortunate main character. Not only did he receive one of the world’s most potent abilities from his idol, but he also developed it to utilize the powers of previous bearers. By summoning the traits of his predecessors, Deku transforms into an indomitable figure within the realm of “My Hero Academia”. Even when he temporarily turned rogue, it required all of Class 1A working together to even momentarily hinder him, and that was only when Deku was weakened after battling villains for consecutive days.
Of all the unique abilities that Dekkai (Deku) uses, each one is powerful in its own right, but certain ones stand out as being particularly exceptional. Amongst the Quirks he can access via One For All, which one would be considered the strongest?
Deku’s Vestige Quirks
Strengths and Drawbacks
In the animated series “My Hero Academia”, Deku, as the ninth bearer of One For All, gains the ability to tap into the innate powers (Quirks) of all his past wielders who each possessed a unique Quirk while they were in control of the power.
Vestige Quirk | Used By | Ability | Drawback |
Gearshift | Second Wielder: Toshitsugu Kudo | Originally, only able to affect small targets, the Quirk evolved after being incorporated into One for All to be capable of greater limits. | It has become difficult to control and can only be used for a few minutes before the user’s body starts to break down. |
Fa Jin | Third Wielder: Bruce Lee | By completing repetitive movements, the user can store energy, which can be later used to enhance their physical stats and unleash powerful attacks. | It takes time to build up enough energy to use effectively against strong opponents. |
Danger Sense | Fourth Wielder: Hikage Shinomori | The user is warned ahead of time of incoming threats, allowing them more time to dodge. | It doesn’t work against attacks delivered without negative emotions, and overusing it can cause headaches. |
Blackwhip | Fifth Wielder: Daigoro Banjo | Dark energy tendrils emanate from the user, allowing for their free manipulation. | Effectiveness depends on the user’s emotional state and can easily become uncontrolled. |
Smokescreen | Sixth Wielder: En Tayutai | The user can release a thick cloud of smoke that obscures vision in an area. | Has no offensive potential to exploit with One For All and can be easily dispelled by powerful attacks or the weather. |
Float | Seven Wielder: Nana Shimura | This quirk grants the user the ability to levitate and fly around with ease. | While extremely useful, the Quirk only reaches its full potential when combined with other offensive measures. |
In the narrative, Toshinori Yagi, who is famously known as All Might, was devoid of a supernatural ability, or Quirk. This meant that Deku didn’t gain a new power from him after his evolution. However, this works well within the storyline because Deku already possesses an abundance of powers. Moreover, it was likely All Might’s lack of a native Quirk that enabled him to accumulate energy for One For All as extensively as he did, potentially enhancing the power of this Quirk more than any other user.
The Strongest Vestige Quirk
Going By the Numbers, Gearshift Seems to be the Most Powerful

A common truth when examining the power level in anime is to identify the one with the most significant limitation, as the creator probably needs to impose this restriction to keep the power in check. Following this rule, Gearshift appears to stand out among the Vestige Quirks.
After activating this artifact, there’s no turning back. If you can’t defeat him within the next five minutes, disaster will strike our world.” -Toshitsugu Kudo, passing on the gravity of the situation to Midoriya as he prepares to engage gearshift.
During the climactic battle, Deku contemplated passing his Gearshift quirk to Shigaraki, as its disadvantage was too severe and he feared being incapacitated in combat. However, with the ability to activate Gearshift in overdrive mode, Deku managed to unleash approximately 120% of One For All’s power, landing blows that exceeded the speed of sound.
Kudo explains that the power Midoriya is utilizing isn’t the same as All For One’s Quirk; instead, it has transformed. At this instant, Izukuu Midoriya is surpassing his presumed boundaries and functioning at 120%.
Kudo asserts that when the ability called Gearshift interacts with One For All’s accumulated power, it can shatter the very fabric of reality with a single blow. Unlike other relic Quirks, however, Gearshift is uniquely described in such dramatic terms. This strongly suggests that Gearshift might be Deku’s most potent relic Quirk, but it also carries the greatest risk or penalty.
My Hero Academia can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
