In his latest update, he highlighted substantial advancements and upcoming projects designed to enhance the functionality of the blockchain network. The main objectives of this upgrade include reducing transaction costs for layer-2 solutions and improving overall data availability.

The Dencun update brought about proto-danksharding or EIP-4844, a new feature enabling data “packets” to be integrated into blocks. This enhancement signifies a significant leap in network efficiency, expanding upon the accomplishments of the Merge and Shanghai upgrades.

It brings Verkle trees into the picture, which translates to stateless clients and significantly reduced node running costs. This change is expected to boost the layer-1 gas limit by a factor of ten, leading to more affordable transactions for users.

They plan to eliminate features like the SELFDESTRUCT opcode and the 2,300 gas stipend. By doing so, they aim to make the EVM more efficient and easier to use.

This modification is a significant milestone towards streamlining Ethereum‘s protocol, enhancing its security, and boosting performance.

The self-destruct ban, which was largely incomplete, has undergone significant changes. Although the opcode remains in existence for the time being, its most detrimental functionality – the ability to edit an infinite number of storage slots simultaneously – has been eliminated since Dencun.
