In a galactic twist that would make Zaphod Beeblebrox do a double-take (or a triple-take, just to be sure), JPMorgan Chase—earth’s premiere collector of dollars and, presumably, goldfish—has decided to dip its corporate toes into the blockchain jacuzzi again, this time on the Base network. Yes, Base. Not the First Floor, nor the Basement, but simply Base—because names are overrated and ambiguity is an asset.
According to Naveen Mallela, an executive at Kinexys (JPMorgan’s clandestine blockchain lair where people say things like “sovereign liquidity” without giggling), a fixed amount of the imaginatively titled JPMD deposit tokens will soon be flung across cyberspace like digital bread rolls—directly onto Coinbase, the crypto exchange that wishes it ran the world, but settles for running a really big spreadsheet.
Moving these tokens will involve Coinbase’s very own layer-2 blockchain, Base—now boasting the biggest market share among Ethereum layer-2s. A fun achievement, sort of like being voted “Tallest Dwarf” by CoinGecko, an organization determined to track far too many things.
Transactions will apparently be denominated in US dollars. Eventually, if the regulatory oracles agree, additional currencies may enter the fray. No word yet on the acceptance of Turkish lira, monopoly money, or Pan Galactic Gargleblaster tokens.
If (and only if) all proceeds according to plan and the universe avoids another galactic reset, after several months Coinbase’s institutional clients will actually get to use JPMD for transactions—a development so exciting it barely registers on the FinTech Politeness Scale.
Deposit tokens: The Next Big Thing, or at Least the Next Slightly Larger Thing 🤔💸
This pilot came hot on the heels of JPMorgan’s bid to trademark “JPMD”—as if anyone else is desperate for those initials. Legal scribes outlined a wide spectrum of crypto services, including digital asset trading, transfers, and some payment processing—like a Swiss Army knife, but for moving imaginary money.
Deposit tokens are digital representations of dollars in actual bank accounts. Imagine a stablecoin, then imagine it wearing a pinstripe suit and asking you to fill out a W-9 form. Unlike stablecoins, which are basically blockchain’s answer to IOUs, deposit tokens stay snuggled up inside the traditional banking system, where they can be lovingly watched over by regulators, compliance clerks, and people who say “frictionless” a lot.
Mallela—clearly angling for a job as the next Ford Prefect—explained to Bloomberg that deposit tokens are, from an institutional perspective, “superior” to stablecoins. Fractional reserve backing is the secret sauce here, handy for anyone who enjoys living dangerously and needs scalability over, say, existential peace of mind.
Potentially, JPMD may even pay interest in the future, unlike most stablecoins, which stubbornly refuse to yield anything except regret. This could shake things up, unless yield-bearing stablecoins (already causing severe tea-spilling incidents in the banking industry) upstage everyone. Depending on whom you ask, the US banking lobby is simply “concerned”—which is BankSpeak for “utterly panic-stricken.”
One source (possibly clutching a towel for comfort) reports that NYU’s Austin Campbell claims banking executives fear they’ll be “harmed” by these interest-paying stablecoins. Whether “harmed” means existentially, spiritually, or just inconvenienced in their yacht-buying schedules, no one seems to know—or care. 🛥️🫖
