Death Stranding 2: On the Shore is the latest creation from Hideo Kojima, and his enthusiasts are in for a treat with the plotline. The tale brings back beloved characters like Sam Porter Bridges, Lou, Fragile, and Heartman, while also introducing several new faces such as Rainy, Tomorrow, and Tarman.

In the game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, each one of these characters plays a crucial role in the story. The length of time it takes to finish this Kojima masterpiece can range from forty to sixty hours, contingent on how many additional missions players choose to tackle during their journey. So, who among these key figures survives and who meets their end? Let’s delve into the main cast to uncover the destinies of each character in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Spoilers Ahead for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

11. Sam Bridges

The Man Of The Hour

  • Played by: Norman Reedus

In both the initial game and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Sam serves as the central character. He has an exceptional talent that enables him to come back to life upon his demise, earning him the title of a Repatriate. Despite numerous deaths throughout the storyline, Sam effectively navigates the game’s events and survives.

He successfully managed to connect the dots among the U.S., Mexico, and eventually Australia, culminating in a heartfelt embrace with his daughter, as he sets his sights on a fresh tomorrow, infused with renewed determination.

10. Fragile

One Last Run

  • Played by: Lea Seydoux

In the sequel, Fragile, originally a significant figure from the initial game, reappears and is now the head of an association called Drawbridge. She hires Sam with the mission to connect the continents.

It seems that events from earlier in the game ultimately resulted in her demise. Throughout the game, she assumed a form that was little more than an empty shell, persisting to aid Sam until his mission was accomplished. In the climactic finale, she utilized her teleportation power selflessly for her team, and in doing so, met her true end.

9. Heartman/Deadman

Two Minds Become One

  • Played by: Nicolas Winding Refn/Guillermo del Toro

In the original game, Heartman and Deadman were distinct characters. However, in the sequel, they’ve merged in a unique way. At the beginning of the new game, Deadman departs from his body and transforms into a spirit on The Beach. He then imparts his heart to Heartman, who uses it to sustain himself.

When Heartman visits The Beach for study purposes, it’s possible for Deadman to take over Heartman’s physical form. By the game’s conclusion, both characters are technically alive, although Deadman’s situation remains somewhat enigmatic – much like the cryptic elements often found in Guillermo del Toro’s films, which Deadman is inspired by.

8. Die-Hardman/Charlie

They Don’t Call Him That For Nothing

  • Played by: Tommy Earl Jenkins

Throughout much of the game, it appears that Die-Hardman is nowhere to be found. However, his voice can be heard emanating from the enigmatic Charlie doll on the DHV Magellan. In a surprising twist at the end, it’s disclosed that Die-Hardman had been physically present on the ship all along, controlling Charlie remotely with his voice.

Following his departure from the UCA presidency, he covertly backed Drawbridge as a privately held enterprise with the aim of reconnecting the globe. It’s largely due to him that Sam has been able to complete his quest, and he continues to thrive in good health.

7. Rainy

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

  • Played by: Shioli Kutsuna

In the sequel of Death Stranding titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”, a fresh character named Rainy is introduced as part of Drawbridge’s initial hiring process. When she ventures outside, it triggers rainfall, which in turn leads to the Timefall phenomenon – an unusual weather condition that causes objects and even people to age rapidly, including vehicles. She frequently employs this unique ability to put out fires, acting like a supernatural firefighter. As the game approaches its conclusion, both Rainy and her baby are thriving quite well.

6. Dollman

He’s No Dummy

  • Played by: Jonathan Roumie

In the captivating world of Death Stranding, I’ve encountered a unique character named Dollman – originally an old ventriloquist puppet, now inhabited by a soul from an era long past, who perished in a BT attack. This spirit made a heart-wrenching sacrifice: giving up his spot on the Beach to ensure his daughter’s soul could find her own Beach first, thereby trapping him within this wooden form. Although I can inflict harm upon him, including severe burns, this wooden body is indestructible. The soul inside remains bound, unmovable even as the credits roll.

5. Tarman

And His Tarry Cat

  • Played by: George Miller

Tarman is a fresh character, serving as the pilot for the DHV Magellan as it navigates the treacherous Tar Currents. Accompanying him on this journey is an unnamed cat that appears to be coated in tar. Tarman believes that this mysterious feline may be the spirit of his lost son, a notion he develops following an optional scene where he shares with Sam that many years ago, he lost both his hand and his son to the Tar Currents.

When Drawbridge leaps to the ultimate Shore, it’s Tarman’s son’s authentic appearance that surfaces where a cat should be, indicating that Tarman was correct from the start. Despite being the eldest among them, Tarman does not perish in “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” and instead remains at the helm of the ship.

4. Higgs

Nailing That Makeup

  • Played by: Troy Baker

In the initial installment, Higgs emerges as the principal antagonist who eventually gets killed by Sam, resulting in his eternal confinement on a beach, which appears to stretch endlessly for Higgs himself. The sequence of events initiated by Higgs ultimately culminates in the demise of Lou, Fragile, and numerous others.

In Mexico and Australia, he doesn’t have a physical body; instead, he exists as a consciousness within a robot, known as a Ghost Mech. Later on The Beach, Sam encounters his physical form. However, it’s worth noting that in the finale, Higgs isn’t killed but rather consumed by a colossal ghostly version of Lou, reminiscent of the Titans from Attack on Titan. Whether this implies that Higgs is deceased once more is uncertain.

3. The President/The Elder

Will This Beach Return?

  • Played by: Alastair Duncan/Armin Shimerman

The President took over the UCA following the decision to have a private corporation safeguard the Chiral Network through APAS. Similarly to Charlie, he serves as a patron for Drawbridge’s voyage, yet clandestinely also finances Higgs in constructing a robotic military force.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found an intriguing twist in the game’s lore: It turns out the President is a character known as “The Elder”. In the initial game, he was more of a background figure, and it’s unclear if his recent appearance is meant to be taken literally. However, one thing’s for sure – The Elder transcends our human world. Despite his global domination schemes being foiled, he didn’t meet his end. Instead, he remains an enigma, waiting to unfold further in the game’s narrative.

2. Neil Vana

A New Force Arrives

  • Played by: Luca Marinelli

In the game, Neil emerges as another antagonist that makes an early appearance during Sam’s journey through another dimension. Throughout this adventure, Sam encounters Neil in three major battles where he commands an unending horde of skeletal soldiers. As the story unfolds, it is disclosed that Neil perished eleven years prior, while trying to shield Sam’s beloved, Lucy, from harm during an accident at Bridges. This tragic event sparked Neil’s wrath, transforming him into a vengeful spirit. By the game’s end, Sam helps bring peace to Neil’s spirit, laying his vengeance to rest.
