The popular webtoon “Solo Leveling” is frequently criticized for concentrating excessively on its main character, Sung Jinwoo, and his personal growth journey. Although various intriguing characters have been introduced in the first two seasons, many of them have since been marginalized, leading to a lack of development for them. As a result, the narrative can appear too predictable at times.
In the upcoming season 3 of “Solo Leveling”, it seems that the storyline could take a significant turn. While some viewers may not have given much thought to it, a seemingly minor moment in the second season has set the stage for a major upheaval in Jinwoo’s world. As evil forces prepare their attack, a mysterious figure is keeping a close eye on the events unfolding. This enigmatic character is none other than Sung’s father, a vigilant protector who could potentially provide the answers Jinwoo seeks.
Sung Il-Hwan on Jeju Island: The Mystery Surrounding Sung’s Father
Jinwoo’s Father Knows Something That the Rest of Humanity is Yet to Figure Out
- Anime Debut: Episode 15, titled “Still a Long Way to Go”
- Webtoon Debut: Chapter 56
Jinwoo’s father, Sung Il-Hwan, was once a devoted family man who went to great lengths to ensure everyone’s safety. The Sung family seemed to be thriving. Following his marriage to Park Kyung-Hye, Il-Hwan had two children with her. Initially employed as a firefighter, his life took an unforeseen turn after he underwent an enlightenment. Il-Hwan was not an ordinary hunter; he might have been one of the earliest S-rankers from Korea. However, since the current global ranking system wasn’t established at that time, he missed out on the benefits he truly deserved.
I will protect my family, even if it means turn all the hunters in the world against me.
On an ordinary day, the lives of the Sung family changed drastically. During a raid, Jinwoo’s father got trapped in a dungeon and was believed to be dead. After his disappearance, the responsibility of raising the children fell onto Park’s shoulders. She did her best to keep the family content, but eventually, she was diagnosed with Eternal Slumber and slipped into a coma. The Sung family faced financial and emotional struggles for years without knowing it. Meanwhile, Il-Hwan was still alive. He was discovered in an American Gate and later apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Hunters.
An investigation started to uncover the true nature of a creature believed to possess magical abilities. Since he only understood Korean, Hwang Dongsoo was tasked with questioning him. At first, Il-Hwan seemed calm and helpful, but tensions escalated when Dongsoo announced that Jinwoo had supposedly perished. Upon detecting the S-ranker’s violent intentions, Il-Hwan lost control and wrecked the headquarters, defeating him. Once again, he vanished without a clue as to his whereabouts.
Instead, rather than rejoining his family, Il-Hwan was spotted once more on Jeju Island, suggesting he may have been observing the Monarchs’ activities. The exact means of his journey from America remains unknown, but it’s clear that he was intentionally postponing their reunion for some peculiar reason. This seemingly insignificant scene in the season 2 finale might be overlooked by many fans, yet it sheds light on a deeper conflict and offers answers to questions that have been puzzling viewers.

It’s worth mentioning that the Monarchs arrived to verify if a powerful being was aiding humans, and interestingly enough, they were probing at the same location where Jinwoo had battled Ant King. This suggests that they might have realized a non-human force was backing Sung, yet they remained uncertain about the motive behind it.
Given that Sung Il-Hwan trailed these ancient beasts, it might imply he grasped their nefarious schemes and perhaps had insights into the roots of Jinwoo’s abilities. Yet, what could hold such significance that he prioritized it over his family, having not seen them for more than a decade?
Jinwoo, Il-Hwan, and the Monarchs
A Conspiracy That Might Change Humanity Forever
It’s intriguing how Sung Il-Hwan has disclosed certain secrets that could potentially unlock the enigma surrounding his disappearance and its connection to a grand conspiracy significantly impacting Solo Leveling’s third season. During Dongsoo’s interrogation, Il-Hwan had hinted at his understanding of Gates and magical beasts, suggesting that the supernatural events linked to dungeons up until now are merely the surface of a much larger iceberg.
In my observation, Sung Il-Hwan declared something alarming. As he sees it, a force capable of orchestrating a disaster has resurfaced, placing humanity in peril. Moreover, he vowed to prevent such a disaster from occurring. What adds to the intrigue is that his son possesses an extraordinary power. To put it simply, it appears that a menacing threat looms over humanity, and time seems to be running out at an alarming rate. So engrossed is Il-Hwan in his investigation that he can hardly find a moment to reunite with his family.
From what the Monarchs mentioned about Jinwoo, it seems that his abilities might be linked to this situation, and it may even involve the ancient monsters. This could be why Sung Il-Hwan is so eagerly pursuing these Monarchs. However, a definitive explanation might not be revealed until Solo Leveling Season 3. In this upcoming season, fans can anticipate uncovering the origins of Jinwoo’s powers and learning the truth about Sung Il-Hwan’s disappearance and his peculiar actions.
Solo Leveling Season 3 is expected to release sometime between 2026 and 2028.
