2025 has been a monumental year for gaming so far, with titles such as “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”, “Donkey Kong Bananza”, and “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” garnering enough recognition to potentially clinch the prestigious Game of the Year accolade. However, the year is still young, offering further possibilities for the industry to outdo itself. As we look towards September, specifically, two much-anticipated shooter games are gearing up to make their mark. “Borderlands 4” and “Dying Light: The Beast” are set to clash in an epic battle, but only one will come out on top – even if both manage to achieve success.
One key similarity between “Borderlands 4” and “Dying Light: The Beast” is that they are both action-packed shooter games. Despite having very few similarities in other aspects, this contrast makes the comparison between them all the more intriguing. Each game will have an opportunity to demonstrate its unique qualities and outshine the other’s shortcomings. It remains to be seen which title will emerge victorious, as both could potentially excel independently. Which one will ultimately reign supreme?
Borderlands 4 and Dying Light: The Beast Are On a Collision Course in September
Borderlands 4’s Early Release and Expansive Co-Op May Give It the Edge
It’s no surprise that Borderlands 4 is one of the most eagerly awaited shooter games of 2025 and an exciting upcoming release overall this year. Since the launch of Borderlands 3, fans have been waiting nearly six years for the next mainline installment in the series, which is finally due out in September. What makes it even more enticing is that Borderlands 4 promises to shake up the franchise with several significant improvements, challenges long-held traditions, and offers plenty of powerful ammunition to boot. In other words, it’s poised to be a pivotal moment for the well-established series, whether it turns out to be good or bad.
Although these elements could potentially strengthen Borderlands 4, they might not provide a significant advantage compared to Dying Light: The Beast. This advantage may hinge more on the sequencing of their releases and a unique characteristic that Dying Light: The Beast lacks – cooperative play. Originally, Dying Light: The Beast was slated for an August release, but it has been pushed back to September 19, allowing Borderlands 4 a week to attract and retain players before the arrival of Dying Light: The Beast. This could be enough time to create such a strong connection with the players that they may not wish to switch to another game, particularly if they desire a shared gaming experience with their friends. Interestingly, Borderlands 4 was initially planned for a September 23 launch, but Gearbox opted to bring it forward, which would have resulted in Borderlands 4 being released after Dying Light: The Beast.
Dying Light: The Beast Leans Into Power Fantasy and Tactical Parkour
Despite an earlier release for Borderlands 4 and its co-op features, Dying Light: The Beast may still capture players’ interest due to its emphasis on survival horror and parkour, setting it apart from Borderlands 4. Moreover, the Dying Light series has gained significant popularity since its debut in 2015, and with Kyle Crane’s return and the introduction of new, impressive abilities, it seems poised to attract both dedicated fans and newcomers, enticing them to set aside time for gameplay.
Prediction: Borderlands 4 Will Come Out on Top

The Beast in this competition. This isn’t only due to its earlier release date and multiplayer capabilities, but also because the Borderlands series is more widely recognized than Dying Light: The Beast, despite the challenges it has faced recently. Given that fans have eagerly awaited a new mainline Borderlands game for almost six years, and considering all the innovative elements it’s introducing to push the franchise forward, it seems that Dying Light: The Beast might struggle to keep pace – although it could potentially give Borderlands 4 a run for its money.
