As a gaming enthusiast, I was hit hard by the recent wave of layoffs and game cancellations that Microsoft announced in early July, one of them being Project Blackbird, an action-RPG MMO from the talented team behind The Elder Scrolls Online at ZeniMax. Unfortunately, it seems like we won’t ever get to witness the full storyline of Project Blackbird, as new reports have shed light on some previously undisclosed details about the game.
Reportedly, True Achievements has shared detailed insights about a game named Project Blackbird, which seems to blend aspects reminiscent of Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny, and Warframe. The protagonist would likely have been a human cyborg, customizable in every aspect, known as a Revenant. This game was set on a distant planet called Soteria, with its main city, Exodus, floating high above, governed by an intelligent AI named PAN. Additionally, it was expected to include five distinct alien factions to confront, along with various extraterrestrial species scattered throughout the cosmos.
In this game, the main storyline carries a noir-like atmosphere, as the player’s character is tasked with investigating the murder of a prominent figure in the city of Exodus. Alongside the main plot, players are presented with multiple side missions aimed at maintaining peace within Exodus and preventing any of the alien factions from gaining too much power. These factions also provide players with assignments that help advance their objectives in the ongoing power struggle for control over Exodus.
Project Blackbird initially aimed to incorporate live-service features, player vs player (PvP) modes, shared worlds, and cooperative gameplay, allowing players to work together. Regrettably, despite an extended phase of preliminary development that molded the game and its universe, the project never advanced into full production. Microsoft allegedly opted to discontinue the work-in-progress title instead of investing further resources, avoiding a potential release in 2027 or 2028.
In this restructuring by Microsoft, not just the unnamed game but also Rare’s Everwild and a revamped Perfect Dark project were sadly put on hold following the recent wave of job reductions.
