In simpler terms, “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “My Hero Academia” were standout hits and key contributions to the popular manga publication, “Shonen Jump.” Upon their completion last year, it seems that the magazine’s sales figures have suffered, suggesting just how influential these two series were for the publication.
While it’s true that Shonen Jump is home to many renowned series, it’s important to note that there are other fantastic shonen manga out there as well. Let’s explore a handful of relatively new series that are garnering significant attention recently. Of course, we won’t be discussing “Solo Leveling” as the next-generation series, given that both the original novel and manhwa adaptation have already reached their conclusions.
Kagurabachi Is A Promising Hit
Shonen Jump’s Darkest Manga
Title | Kagurabachi |
Serialized since | September 2023 |
Magazine | Shonen Jump |
I’ve noticed that the manga series Kagurabachi, despite only being around for more than two years, has already garnered a significant following within Shonen Jump. There’s a strong expectation that its popularity will soar even higher once the anime adaptation airs. Interestingly, although Shueisha and no official production company have announced it yet, Toyo Keizai – a well-respected business magazine in Japan – has reported that the anime is currently being produced. According to their report, Cygames Pictures will be responsible for the animation.
The series is occasionally referred to as a modern-day equivalent of “Jujutsu Kaisen” because of its more somber atmosphere compared to other popular shows. Instead of a cheerful protagonist striving for greatness, Kagurabachi features a resentful main character seeking retribution. Chihiro Rokuhira is the son of a renowned blacksmith who crafted six Enchanted Blades, crucial during a war. However, after a gang of criminals slaughtered his father to steal the blades, Chihiro draws a seventh, unidentified blade and sets out on a mission to track down and punish the killers.
So far, there are 8 volumes out for this series, and as of May 2025, more than 2 million copies have been distributed. Given that things seem to be running smoothly with its production, there’s a good chance that the series will experience a significant surge in popularity if all goes well with the anime.
Ichi the Witch Is Already Peaking
A Great Surprise for Jump Fans
Title | Ichi the Witch |
Serialized since | September 2024 |
Magazine | Shonen Jump |
I’ve found myself quite captivated by the enchanting allure of “Ichi the Witch,” a standout surprise from the esteemed pages of Shonen Jump. Crafted by the brilliant mind behind “Iruma-kun,” Osamu Nishi, and beautifully illustrated by the talented hand of Shiro Usazaki, who graced us with Act-Age, this manga has been making waves less than a year after its debut in Shonen Jump. Already, many view it as one of the magazine’s signature titles, thanks to its impressive sales figures in the initial volumes.
In this manga, the story unfolds in a different world where women known as Witches track down magical beasts to harness their powers. But an extraordinary twist occurs when a young boy named Ichi emerges victorious over one such beast, making him the unique first male Witch.
Gachiakuta Has A Great Anime
It Might Become a Solid Shonen Hit
Title | Gachiakuta |
Serialized since | February 2022 |
Magazine | Shonen Magazine |
Gachiakuta hasn’t been serialized in Shonen Jump, but it has risen to fame among popular shonen mangas in recent times. Similar to Kagurabachi, it often gets compared to Jujutsu Kaisen due to its darker narrative style. Many readers find the characters in Gachiakuta’s story to be more complex and well-developed when compared to those in Kagurabachi.
Ever since its debut a few weeks back, the anime has garnered more attention, yet the manga has been in circulation since 2022. The author, Kei Urana, previously worked under Atsushi Ohkubo – creator of both “Fire Force” and “Soul Eater”. Notably, Ohkubo himself has recognized Urana as his potential successor. Gachiakuta revolves around Rudo, a boy residing in the slums in a society characterized by immense wealth disparity. A tragic turn of events sees Rudo falsely accused of murdering his foster father, prompting him to vow revenge someday.
Frieren Is Different, And Refreshing
One of the Best Fantasy Anime in the Past Few Years
Title | Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End |
Serialized since | April 2020 |
Magazine | Shonen Sunday |
Frieren wasn’t an anticipated success among some viewers. Instead of concentrating on action and combat, this series adopts a more philosophical stance, discussing themes such as the passage of time, grief, and mortality. Despite deviating from the conventional shonen narrative, Frieren has managed to find its unique identity and blaze its own trail towards popularity. Similar to Gachiakuta, it is published in Shonen Jump, possibly indicating that the magazine’s international shonen audience influence isn’t as dominant as it once was.
In the tale of Frieren, an elf stands apart due to her unique perception of time compared to her former comrades. Having vanquished the Demon King together long ago, she later discovers just how drastically things have altered over the passage of time. On a new adventure, she rekindles old emotions towards her late companion Himmel, among others. First serialized in 2020, Frieren’s story continues to unfold and is expected to persist for several years ahead.
Akanebanashi Will Break Records
Traditional Japanese Culture Can Also Be Popular
Title | Akanebanashi |
Serialized since | February 2022 |
Magazine | Shonen Jump |
It’s worth noting that “Akanebanashi” was once an unexpected choice for serialization in the well-known manga magazine “Shonen Jump,” given its focus on rakugo, a traditional Japanese theater form, rather than the usual action-packed series associated with the publication. Few would have imagined such a story gaining approval from “Jump.
From 2022 onwards, I’ve found myself deeply engrossed in the captivating tale of “Akanebanashi.” This series, rich with traditional Japanese culture, has drawn a significant following not just domestically, but internationally as well. And rightfully so, it’s an outstanding narrative. The story revolves around Akane, the daughter of a rakugo performer. Unfortunately, her father was dismissed from the Arakawa School in his pursuit of the highest rank in rakugo performance. Six years have passed, and now Akane, with quiet determination, is endeavoring to earn the position of shin’uchi at the same school – a quest driven by her desire for vengeance on behalf of her father.
