The world of Pokémon may not be completely understood by me, yet I can undeniably admire the idea behind a collector’s mentality. For numerous years, Pokémon enthusiasts have been on the hunt for valuable cards, whether to enhance their collection or to resell them in the open market. However, it’s possible that not everyone realizes the worth of the cards they possess within their deck.
Before the Pokémon World Championship in California, a brief study was compiled to highlight some extremely rare Pokémon cards that players may unknowingly possess.

What’s The Most Expensive Original Pokémon Card?
A study conducted by Pinnacle, using sales data from the resale market, trending keywords, and regional statistics, determined the costliest original Pokémon cards based on their market worth and overall popularity.
At the peak of the table, the prized Gyrados Star card from the Holon Phantoms classification stood tall, with a projected value of around $2,000. This Gold Star card is highly sought after by Pokémon enthusiasts, especially those residing in California and Texas.
In simpler terms, among all original Pokémon cards, the second costliest is the Mewtwo from the Base Set without shadows. This card typically sells for approximately $900, making it quite valuable and possibly hidden away in an old binder somewhere.
Here’s Pinnacle’s data from the top ten most expensive original Pokémon cards:
- Gyrados Star (Holon Phantoms) – $1,999
- Mewtwo (Base Set Shadowless) – $900
- Venusaur (Base Set Shadowless) – $793
- Rocket’s Snorlax Ex (Team Rocket Returns) – $595
- Sabrina’s Gengar (Gym Heroes) – $579
- Charizard (Base Set) – $455
- Charizard (Base Set Shadowless) – $420
- Dark Charizard (Team Rocket) – $386
- Rocket’s Mewtwo (Gym Challenge) – £336
- Charizard (Base Set 2) – $311
To create this list, Pinnacle utilized a starting set of highly-valued Pokemon cards as a foundation. They then factored in the current market prices (which may vary due to fluctuations), along with search data related to keywords from Google, to generate the final ranking.
