According to the most recent yearly online poll conducted by Atlus, there might be plans for a new installment in the Metaphor: ReFantazio series. Launched towards the end of 2024, Metaphor: ReFantazio has been widely praised as one of the top JRPGs released recently, and its enthusiasts are anxiously waiting to hear if a follow-up game could potentially be in development.
ReFantazio” was highly praised by critics in 2024, earning a top rating with an average score of 93 on OpenCritic. Unlike the “Shin Megami Tensei” and “Persona” series, however, “Metaphor: ReFantazio” launched a new game franchise. As a result, players are unsure if a sequel will be produced in the future.
Atlus Could Be Considering a Sequel to Metaphor: ReFantazio
Recently, Atlus has launched a new consumer survey for their fans, as reported by Persona Central. The majority of questions revolve around the games that fans currently play or plan to buy. However, Question 49 stands out, inquiring whether fans would be intrigued by a “new game or sequel” for several series. This question delves into some classic franchises like Etrian Odyssey, Persona, and Shin Megami Tensei, but it also seeks feedback on Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Although there’s no definite proof that “Metaphor: ReFantazio 2” is being made, the fact that its title is under consideration suggests it was successful enough to consider a sequel. Regrettably, sales of “Metaphor: ReFantazio” dropped dramatically after selling one million copies on its first day, with total sales now at two million units. Since its release was heavily front-loaded, it remains uncertain how much Atlus is inclined towards creating a follow-up game.
Last month, there was talk that ReFantazio might make its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2. Being accessible on this new platform could potentially expand its reach, boosting the likelihood of a sequel or further tales from the same universe.
It’s unlikely that a follow-up to “Metaphor: ReFantazio” will come out in the near future. Back in 2024, the game director Katsuro Hashino mentioned that Atlus had no immediate plans for a sequel. Given that game development usually takes at least three years or more, it’s safe to say we won’t see it anytime before 2026 or so. However, there’s an anticipated release in the horizon – “Persona 4 Revival” – which is expected to drop sometime after April 2026, making it the probable next Atlus RPG.
