The Nintendo Switch 2, launched on June 5, is almost three months old now, and it’s been one of the quickest-selling consoles since its debut. However, Nintendo has faced an issue with other developers struggling to release their games on the new platform because they haven’t received the necessary development kits yet.
In the most recent episode of Digital Foundry’s Direct Weekly program, John Linneman and Oliver Mackenzie discussed their experiences at Gamescom in Cologne, which included a focus on Nintendo not providing Switch 2 development kits to several developer groups, including some major game studios.
According to Linneman, Nintendo appears to be somewhat limiting Switch 2 development by suggesting to developers that their games should primarily be released for the original Switch and leverage backwards compatibility. Many developers have expressed their desire to create versions specifically for the Switch 2, but are unable to obtain the necessary hardware development kits. This makes it challenging for them to do so at the moment.
Overhearing tidbits here and there, I chatted with folks who shared with me some curious omissions in the game development scene. Seems like a few major developers are having trouble securing their game kits, apparently.
As a gamer, I was pleased to see some indie games included in the lineup, it’s always refreshing to see new talent shine. However, I found it peculiar that games like the campfire-style one were offered kits, while established AAA developers, who create high-end AAA titles, weren’t seemingly in the loop for these kits.
Not all studios who haven’t received Switch 2 development kits were specifically named, but they can be inferred, especially when considering larger studios that haven’t announced any new games for the platform yet. However, fans will need to wait and observe how third-party support expands on the console over the next few months and years.
