The beta for Battlefield 6 concluded quite some time ago, leaving fans eagerly anticipating more high-octane, chaotic gameplay. Rather than waiting until October 10 to play Battlefield 6, a massive number of players are instead flocking to Battlefield 2042, causing the game’s sales to surge back up the charts, nearly four years after its initial release.
Initially, Battlefield 2042 faced numerous challenges right from its launch, causing concern among fans that it might mark the decline of the franchise. However, after several challenging years for Battlefield enthusiasts, Battlefield 2042 is now poised to enjoy a long-overdue period of positive attention. Meanwhile, anticipation builds for Battlefield 6, which many believe will help revitalize the series.
Battlefield 2042 Player Count Soars
The popular game Battlefield 2042 has seen a significant surge in popularity on Steam, with a peak of 75,000 simultaneous players and matching the player numbers of top-tier shooters. This rise can be attributed to a) the anticipation for Battlefield 6 and b) an impressive sale that significantly reduced the game’s price to record lows.
On Steam, since its initial release, Battlefield 2042 reached its peak player count that was not surpassed, excluding the occasion of the free weekend in October 2023 which temporarily boosted the game to 107,376 simultaneous players.

It’s likely that similar amounts of buzz are present on other platforms too, since Battlefield 6 is approaching rapidly.
The latest edition of the Alinea Analytics newsletter featured an analysis conducted by their team on the progress of Battlefield 2042.
Last week, roughly half a million copies of Battlefield 2042 were sold on Steam. The excitement surrounding the upcoming Battlefield 6 certainly played a role in this, but the main factor driving the surge in sales is a massive price reduction – a whopping 95% discount that brought its cost down to just $2.99, making it the lowest price ever offered on Steam.
EA frequently conducts large-scale discount sales for its older games to generate additional income before reporting its financial results. The $1.4 million earned on Battlefield through Steam sales is significant and worth noting. We can anticipate even more such sales by the end of Q3.
It’s unfortunate that players are likely entering Battlefield 2042 with expectations similar to Battlefield 6, given the recent open beta. However, what they’ll find isn’t necessarily bad, but it doesn’t measure up to the experience of Battlefield 6.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I’ve dived into Battlefield 2042 with high hopes for Battlefield 6! But maybe you grabbed it for a steal and haven’t played it yet. Regardless of the reason, feel free to share your thoughts on the game in the TopMob forum!
