As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of Final Fantasy 14, has revealed some intriguing news about the return of the Ascians! Unlike in previous versions, these antagonists will have unique motives that set them apart. In a thrilling twist, Patch 7.3’s main story concluded with the reemergence of the ominous black-cloaked Ascians, marking their long-awaited comeback to Final Fantasy 14’s main narrative.
Essentially, the Ascians are remnants of a civilization called the Ancients, who laid the foundation for the game world of Final Fantasy 14’s main setting, Etheirys. Known also as the Convocation of Fourteen, the Ascians opposed Hydaelyn and her guardians and pledged loyalty to the Elder Primal, Zodiark. In the expansion, Endwalker, both Zodiark and Hydaelyn were defeated by the Warrior of Light and their companions, which marked the end of the Ascians’ plan to restore Etheirys to its original form. Over half of the fourteen Convocation members have been neutralized by the Warrior of Light across the storyline.
Final Fantasy 14’s Remaining Ascians Will Not Repeat Past Story Beats
In the upcoming patches for Final Fantasy 14, the Ascians are expected to return and potentially cause issues for the Warrior of Light. To alleviate player concerns about their intentions, Yoshida, the game director, clarified in an interview with TheGamer during Gamescom that the story unfolding in Dawntrail’s remaining updates and the next expansion will delve deeper into the Ascians. However, Yoshida emphasized that Final Fantasy 14 will not rehash old stories when it comes to the Ascians, instead, they will have their own plans. As the game moves forward to explore more aspects of the Ninth Reflection, the involvement of the Ascians in the shards of Etheirys becomes a viable plot point. Moreover, Yoshida encouraged players to look up the meaning of “winterer” after it was mentioned by Calyx, an Endless scientist, during Patch 7.3’s story.

A winter resident refers to an individual or animal that inhabits or temporarily stays at a particular place during the winter season, or it could denote someone capable of enduring challenging living circumstances, such as severe winters and blizzards.
Yoshida also shared details about the permanent integration of the Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration into Final Fantasy 14, reminiscent of the earlier event with Monster Hunter World. The Final Fantasy 14 segment of this collaboration goes live in early October, introducing players to a challenging new boss fight against Arkveld, the draconic Guardian. On the other hand, Monster Hunter Wilds players will encounter Omega Planetes starting from late September.

It’s unclear yet how the Ascians will develop into a challenging force in the next expansion of Final Fantasy 14. But fans might not have much longer to speculate, as details about future plans for the game are expected to be revealed during the broadcast of its FanFest events on August 27 at 3:00 AM Eastern.
