It seems that the run of ‘Final Fantasy 14‘ on PlayStation 4 could be drawing to a close more quickly than some enthusiasts may prefer, as suggested by its creator, Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida. During his talk about the game’s future and upcoming content, he touched upon this topic among others.
The main storyline of Final Fantasy 14’s latest expansion, Dawntrail, is mostly concluded, and the game is now preparing for its next story chapter. Anticipation among fans is high as they eagerly await to see what’s next for Final Fantasy 14, given that the reception of Dawntrail has been somewhat divided. However, players who primarily use a PlayStation 4 might find it challenging to progress far into Future Final Fantasy 14 due to their console.
Final Fantasy 14 is Pushing PS4 Support to the Limit
In a conversation with Feed4Gamers, Yoshi-P was questioned about the game’s continued compatibility with the aging PlayStation 4, considering other games have ceased support for this console. Yoshi-P did not directly confirm if the game would still be playable on the PS4 by the time the next expansion or patch 8.5 is released, instead suggesting that the game is nearing its limit on the PlayStation 4. He explained that Sony has restrictions regarding data capacity, and that they had previously been granted an increase in this limit by Sony themselves. However, Sony has reportedly informed Square Enix that it’s approaching the maximum capacity the system can handle.

Yoshi-P stated that they aim to extend their support across multiple platforms for as long as technologically feasible. Yet, he acknowledged that the hardware’s technology will eventually reach its maximum potential. At this point, PlayStation 4 support is expected to conclude. However, before this happens, Yoshi-P intends to explain the reasons behind this decision clearly and personally address the players directly.

Players actively engaged in the Final Fantasy 14 community, who are still utilizing PS4, might want to ponder an upgrade in the coming days. The PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms can accommodate this game, and Yoshi-P has hinted at constructive dialogues regarding the potential arrival of Final Fantasy 14 on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. This could be a viable option. It’s worth mentioning that due to its aging hardware, the PS4 version did not benefit from as many graphical enhancements as the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X editions. Therefore, those who choose to upgrade may appreciate revisiting the game’s world on a more modern console or PC.
