New Xbox Game Pass Change Is Great News for Subscribers

Starting today, August 27, there’s a significant update for Xbox Game Pass! In a recent blog post, the team revealed that they will be introducing their widely-used cloud streaming service to the lower tiers of Xbox Game Pass, such as Core and Standard. Although the rollout isn’t complete for all users, members of the Xbox Insider program can try it out immediately.

The ever-growing selection of new games and day-one releases has kept Xbox Game Pass among the most profitable subscription services in the gaming industry. Over time, its popularity has soared, leading to significant changes. In 2023, Microsoft abolished Xbox Live Gold and introduced the widely recognized Core tier. This tier grants access to online multiplayer and a limited library of games for subscribers. The following year, they launched the Xbox Game Pass Standard, which sits between Core and Ultimate as the mid-tier option. Although these lower tiers might initially seem less profitable than Ultimate, Microsoft is planning a major shift that could alter subscribers’ perceptions.

Cloud Streaming Comes to All Xbox Game Pass Tiers

In a recent blog post by the Xbox Insider Team (reported by VGC), Microsoft unveiled substantial updates to their subscription service. Commencing August 27, members of the Xbox Insider program can trial a new update featuring Xbox Cloud Gaming within both Core and Standard tiers, which was previously restricted to the Ultimate tier’s streaming games. Moreover, Microsoft hinted at broadening PC gaming experiences through Xbox Game Pass by granting Core and Standard subscribers access to certain PC game versions.

The updates you heard about earlier are exclusive to Xbox Insider Program participants at the moment. However, they will soon become accessible to everyone. Regrettably, Microsoft has yet to announce a specific date for when these updates will be available to the general public.

It’s no surprise that as Xbox Cloud Gaming remains a hit among Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Just days after Microsoft hinted at a more affordable cloud gaming service (as reported by The Verge), this news is now official. According to Microsoft’s head of next-gen, the popularity of cloud gaming is evident. He noted that many users leverage Game Pass Ultimate to access the cloud. Given its widespread appeal, it’s logical for the company to make this feature available on lower subscription tiers, potentially attracting even more users to the service.
