Resident Evil 9 Has a Third-Person Camera Because Resident Evil 7 Was “Too Scary”

In simpler terms, Resident Evil 9 follows the latest installments of the Resident Evil game series, and Grace Ashcroft plays a significant role in it. Interestingly, we’ve heard from Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi that Resident Evil 7 was considered “too terrifying” when played in first-person perspective.

Following the letdown of Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7 felt like a much-needed change: A reversion to the tense horror genre where resources are scarce, puzzles are engaging, and the atmosphere is oppressively confined. The Baker family certainly delivered on their promising reputation. Yet, it appears not everyone was eager to confront this formidable family-thus, a third-person camera perspective for Resident Evil 9.

You Can Switch Between First-Person & Third-Person Camera in Resident Evil 9

During an interview with GamesRadar, Nakanishi highlighted the potential inclusion of a fresh third-person camera perspective for Resident Evil 9.

Reflecting on the first-person perspective of Resident Evil 7, I adopted this approach to enhance immersion and intensify fear factor, a decision that was widely appreciated as making the game more terrifying than ever. However, some critics and players felt it was excessively scary.

It seems that some individuals found the game challenging and either failed to complete it or chose not to begin. This experience has led me to reflect on how I can ensure everyone can enjoy this game. If you initiate the game from a first-person perspective and discover it’s too intense, switching to third person provides a bit of distance, making it less overwhelming by presenting your character as a sort of personal avatar on screen.

In all honesty, Jack Baker breaking down the walls of his own house and pursuing me was truly terrifying beyond words. And don’t get me started on the grotesque creature from Resident Evil 8 Village resembling a giant baby fetus – shudder!

In the game Resident Evil 9, players have the option to switch between a first-person and third-person viewpoint. For those who prefer an immersive, close-up horror experience (like myself), the first-person view is available. On the other hand, if you’d like to reduce the intensity of the emotional impact, a third-person camera angle might be more suitable for you.
