Discord Greatly Expands Server Capacity
On September 3rd, Discord unveiled an update featuring numerous under-the-hood improvements, bug fixes, and the addition of new features. Most changes are anticipated to be positively received by the community; however, it’s the server size expansion that has left users in awe. The recent update now permits up to 25 million users on a single platform server, which is ample space for many gaming communities, even if every player were to join a dedicated server for their specific game. For instance, two popular Ubisoft titles, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 5, came close but didn’t quite hit 25 million sales. As an alternative illustration, the new capacity is large enough to house the combined population of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway within a single Discord server with some extra space remaining. This expansion could significantly impact developers who integrate Discord directly into their games.
Despite the fact that most servers usually don’t reach this limit, achieving it is an impressive technical feat that probably involved significant effort behind the scenes. Discord boasts about enhancements to batched server updates and asynchronous operations, which are intended to boost performance for extremely large servers. The platform has made a remarkable journey from its beginnings as a casual project among Final Fantasy 11 players aimed at facilitating easier communication with each other.
Beyond the server modifications, Discord has introduced some novel features and enhancements that might catch users’ attention. For instance, they’ve optimized the Android app to function more smoothly on older or less powerful devices. They’ve also upgraded the mobile version of the Discord Shop to match the desktop version’s experience. New server permission settings allow for message pinning, and there’s a new sound effect triggered when a user enables or disables their camera, aiming to enhance privacy.
