On weekends, there’s a captivating allure to immersing oneself in a gaming marathon. The pace of work slackens, the schedule opens up, and it seems as if you have the freedom to delve into a universe that sprawls much further than your living room. Fortunately, Xbox is offering an open-world sale throughout this weekend, making it feel like a personal invitation to embark on an adventure.
Open-world games aren’t just about expansive environments; they’re about the liberty they offer. You can roam freely, get sidetracked by side missions, follow a whim that leads to an unforeseen journey or a boss fight that seems straight out of a nightmare due to being overpowered. They’re about stories that resonate on a personal level, whether you’re investigating a crime, shaping the destiny of a wasteland, or confronting a swordmaster who won’t back down easily. This weekend, I’ve curated a list of games for Xbox Series X/S that are ideal for getting lost in. Some are my personal recommendations, some are timeless classics worth revisiting, and all of them will leave you craving just one more round until it’s past midnight.
L.A. Noire
At the age of 15 in 2013, I found myself drawn back into the world of gaming with L.A. Noire. The retro vibe was prevalent everywhere at the time, and I was eager to prove my gaming credibility by delving into something more mature. I chose Rockstar’s dramatic detective game set in post-World War II Los Angeles, which had been released a couple of years before. Even now, L.A. Noire stands out as something extraordinary. While the innovative facial motion capture technology might have shown signs of age, the excitement of interrogating suspects, unraveling mysteries, and traversing a city shrouded in noir atmosphere remains captivating. It’s one of Rockstar’s most intriguing ventures, blending the raw essence of pulp novels with a crime story that values patience as much as it does curiosity.
In a more conversational style: This open-world game holds a special place in my heart too. My mom, who’s got a background in criminology and has always been intrigued by true crime, would often watch me play for hours. She’d peer over my shoulder to help me decode suspects’ facial expressions during interrogations or spot clues I might have missed. It was an incredible bonding experience we shared that no other game could match. Coincidentally, it’s her birthday this weekend. Although she’ll probably be out celebrating, I can’t help but think how great it would be to sit beside her today, cause a bit of virtual havoc with a police car crash, and laugh until we cry!
Fallout: New Vegas
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel the thrill building up for the upcoming second season of Fallout! If you’re still riding high from the Fallout TV series, there couldn’t be a better moment to dive back into the world of Fallout: New Vegas. Regarded as the gem of the franchise, it delivers all the excitement an open-world RPG enthusiast could ask for – branching narratives, morally ambiguous decisions, factions to ally with or deceive, and a wasteland teeming with danger and opportunity that feels strikingly real.
Regardless if you’re navigating diplomatically through the Mojave or embracing chaos, New Vegas ensures that every decision carries weight. With Fallout’s affectionate following growing, revisiting this post-apocalyptic masterpiece feels like donning the series’ worn boots once more, but with a touch more self-assurance.
Sekiro
For action-focused gamers seeking intricate combat rather than extensive wandering, the game Sekiro provides a precise battle system set in a finely detailed, semi-open yet essentially linear world. It’s challenging, but also incredibly satisfying. A game that fosters perseverance, skill, and tenacity. Unlike Dark Souls and Elden Ring where you can sometimes power through battles, Sekiro requires focus and rhythm. The reward is a dance of steel and timing that feels unique on Xbox Series X/S. This game is ideal for players who want their weekend battle to be as stunningly beautiful as it is brutally challenging.
